Year ending with gun violence in metro area

One of several shootings results in a fatality in southwest Atlanta.

Bloodshed and gunshots closed out the year in metro Atlanta this weekend, with multiple shootings reported the last hours of 2023.

Among the reports of violence being investigat­ed by police are these:

■ A man died after being found following a Saturday night shooting at a complex along Campbellto­n Road in southwest Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Police Department. Police responded around 10 p.m. and the man was pronounced dead at an address that appears to be the Southwood Vista Apartment Homes. An investigat­ion is underway, police reported.

■ A man was shot early Sunday morning while he was trying to break into a home on Richardson Street in southwest Atlanta, police said.

Police said they responded to the incident at 3:13 a.m. As officers began to investigat­e, they learned the man “had entered the location illegally. An occupant of the home was awakened as the male entered her room. The occupant then retrieved a firearm and shot the intruder.”

Police said they charged the man with burglary, and he is being held at Grady Detention.

■ Police responded to reports of shots fired around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at 186 Andrew Young Internatio­nal Boulevard, a downtown address that appears to be at Centennial Olympic Park. One man was found wounded and was taken to the hospital where he was alert and breathing, according to Atlanta police. Officers learned another man also had been shot in the incident and he was also hospitaliz­ed, alert and breathing.

Investigat­ors “are working to determine the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the shooting,” according to the police department.

■ In Dekalb County early Saturday morning, police investigat­ed a 24-year-old man found on Chapel Park Drive with gunshot wounds, according to Channel 2 Action News. The man reported he was shot by an unknown person while he was driving by a house a block away on Wesley View. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatenin­g.

■ Dekalb police also were investigat­ing the shoting of a man as he exited a MARTA bus on Hillandale Drive on Saturday. Apparently the 47-year-old’s injuries were not life-threatenin­g.
