Five people, including three preschool-age children, were killed when a school bus and a semitruck collided Monday in Rushville, Ill., police said. The school bus was traveling east on Route 24 and“for an unknown reason crossed over into the west bound lanes in front of the semitruck”about 11:30 a.m. local time, the Illinois State Police said in a news release. The vehicles collided and were engulfed in flames after impact, according to police.

Southwest plans to reduce capacity, reevaluate 2024 financial outlook:

Shares of Southwest plunged Tuesday as the airline said it plans to reduce capacity and reevaluate its full-year financial outlook because of fewer expected aircraft deliveries from it supplier, Boeing. Southwest Airlines said in a regulatory filing Boeing expects to deliver 46 737-8 planes this year. The company previously anticipate­d 79 737 Max aircraft deliveries, which included 58 737-8 planes.

2 skiers from New Zealand are killed after avalanche in Japan:

Two backcountr­y skiers from New Zealand have died in an avalanche on Japan’s northernmo­st main island of Hokkaido, police said Tuesday. A man and woman died Monday on the 6,227-foot Mount Yotei, the Hokkaido prefectura­l police said. A third skier, a man also from New Zealand, survived with a shoulder injury, Kyodo News said. All three were residents in the area and worked as a tour guide and seasonal workers, police said.

Two dogs die during Iditarod, prompting PETA to call for race to end:

Two dogs died over the weekend in the Iditarod, the first canine casualties in the grueling 1,000-mile sled dog race in five years, and the deaths prompted PETA to call for an end to the endurance race that has traversed the Alaskan wilderness for 52 years. Bog, a 2-year-old male on musher Issac Teaford’s team, collapsed Sunday morning roughly 200 feet from the checkpoint in the village of Nulato and died despite efforts by a veterinari­an to revive him, race officials said. George, a 4-year-old male on the team of Hunter Keefe, died despite resuscitat­ion efforts.

Philippine­s says U.S. will address concerns over garment exports:

The U.S. commerce secretary has committed to address concerns by the Philippine­s after American authoritie­s held up shipments of garments on suspicion that cotton was produced by forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region, Philippine officials said Tuesday. Philippine Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual raised the issue in a meeting Monday with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who was leading a U.S. business delegation in Manila to further expand trade and investment in America’s oldest treaty ally in Asia.
