Luca Nardi used a combinatio­n of poise and power to stun top-seeded Novak Djokovic, his boyhood idol, with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win Monday night in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Nardi, ranked No. 123, closed his upset of the world’s top-ranked player with an ace. Nardi, 20, dropped his racket and brought his hands to his face almost in disbelief before greeting Djokovic at the net.“This is a miracle,” Nardi said in an interview after the match on the Tennis Channel. Nardi was nearly on his way home. He got into the field as a “lucky loser,” a player who stumbled on the final hurdle in qualifying but made it into the main draw as an injury replacemen­t. Nardi stepped in for Tomas Martin Etcheverry, ranked 30th in the world, and received a bye into the second round. He became the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 level event. Nardi moved into the top 100 of the rankings with his win.

PRO BASEBALL:

Former New York Mets and Yankees star Darryl Strawberry is recovering from a heart attack and is at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital in Missouri. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Strawberry was stricken Monday, a day before the eight-time All-Star’s 62nd birthday. Strawberry, who lives in O’Fallon, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb, is resting comfortabl­y, Horwitz said. The Mets will retire Strawberry’s No. 18 on June 1.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Clemson fired coach Amanda Butler after six seasons and one NCAA Tournament appearance. Butler, who was hired by Clemson after being fired by Florida following an 11-season run with the Gators, went 81-106 in six seasons, including 32-75 in the ACC. The Tigers were 12-19 overall and 5-13 in the ACC this season.

PRO FOOTBALL:

Amit Patel, 31, a former Jaguars financial manager who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $22 million from the franchise, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison Tuesday in Jacksonvil­le. Prosecutor­s said he used the money to gamble and finance a lavish lifestyle. He also was ordered to pay $21 million in restitutio­n.
