1 PRO FOOTBALL: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo signed with the Los Angeles Rams on Friday as the backup to Matthew Stafford. Garoppolo was released Wednesday by the Las Vegas Raiders after one disappointing season. He is best known to Rams fans from his years with the archrival San Francisco 49ers from 2017-22, during which he went 8-0 as a starter against L.A. in the regular season.
2 PRO FOOTBALL: The Los Angeles Chargers added their second tight end during free agency with the signing of former Falcon Hayden Hurst on Friday. Hurst was released by Carolina in a salary-cap move Wednesday. He had 18 receptions for 184 yards and a touchdown last season but missed the final eight games after suffering a concussion. Hurst’s best year was with Atlanta in 2020, when he had 58 catches for 571 yards and six touchdowns.
PRO TENNIS: Top-ranked Novak 3 Djokovic will skip the Miami Open, saying less than a week after a surprise loss at Indian Wells he needs to balance his “private and professional schedule.” Djokovic’s announcement Saturday on his social media accounts follows his 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 defeat to unheralded Luca Nardi on Monday in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. The 36-year-old Djokovic is a six-time champion in Miami. The hardcourt tournament begins this week.
4 PRO CYCLING: Marco Belgian cyclist Jasper Philipsen sprinted to win the fastest-ever Milan-San Remo and claim his first victory in a “monument” race. The Alpecin– Deceuninck rider edged out Michael Matthews and two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar on Saturday. Philipsen finished the 179-mile route in 6 hours, 14.44 seconds.
5 COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Topseeded Vermont beat No. 2 seed UMass Lowell 66-61 on Saturday to clinch its third straight America East title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Vermont (28-6) has won six of the last eight AEC championships in the one-bid league.
