MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Washington hired Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle as its coach, replacing the fired Mike Hopkins. Washington moves into the Big Ten next season. Sprinkle’s hiring came a day after Utah State was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament with a second-round loss to Purdue. Sprinkle, 47, spent one season at Utah State after four seasons at Montana State. The Aggies went 28-7, won the Mountain West regular-season title and beat TCU in the NCAA tourney’s first round.

SKIING: Swiss stars Marco Odermatt and Lara Gut-Behrami earned the most money on Alpine skiing’s World Cup circuit this season, although the two overall champions made less than the record $1 million totals of one year ago. Odermatt again won 13 races to earn $903,000, compared to his total of $1,017,000 last year. Gut-Behrami topped the women’s list with $640,000 in a season in which she won a career-best eight races. Both missed out on several opportunities to earn more as a series of races in the downhill and super-G disciplines were canceled because of weather issues. In her injury-plagued season, American Mikaela Shiffrin earned $621,000, one year after earning a World Cuprecord $1.04 million. Shiffrin’s nine race wins was five fewer than last season. Odermatt made more than twice as much as any other male skier.

PRO BASEBALL: The Mets will wear patches on the sleeves of their uniforms this season to honor the late Bud Harrelson. Team officials said the patches will feature Harrelson’s No. 3 and“BUDDY.”The former shortstop died Jan. 10 at age 79 after being stricken with Alzheimer’s disease. He was a player for the Mets’ 1969 World Series champions and a coach for the 1986 championship team. Harrelson played for the Mets from 1965-77 and managed the team in 1990 and ’91.

PRO BASEBALL: Jared Jones earned a spot in the Pirates’ starting rotation. Jones, 22, was a second-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft out of La Mirada (California) High.
