1 PRO FOOTBALL: Buffalo Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula are exploring the possibility of selling a noncontrolling, minority interest in the franchise, the team announced. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press the stake the Pegulas would be preparing to sell would be about 25%. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that detail was not announced. The Pegulas said no sale would take place without them maintaining a controlling interest in the franchise.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: 2
Kenny Payne has been hired as associate head coach at Arkansas under John Calipari. Payne, 57, was fired last month after going 12-52 in two seasons as coach at Louisville, his alma mater. Before that, he spent 10 years as an assistant at Kentucky under Calipari, helping the Wildcats win the national championship in 2012, play for the 2014 title and reach four Final Fours. Payne also has been an assistant at Oregon and for the NBA’s New York Knicks. As associate head coach at Kentucky from 2014-20, Payne helped the Wildcats consistently land highly ranked recruiting classes.
INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY: 3
John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild has been named the coach of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team for next month’s IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia. USA Hockey announced the appointment Friday for the event that will take place from May 10-26 and be held in Prague and Ostrava. Hynes finished his first season as coach of the Wild this week, missing the NHL playoffs. Hynes, 49, also has been a head coach for the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils and for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
PRO BASEBALL: The Boston 4 Red Sox acquired right-handed pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez from the Milwaukee Brewers for cash and optioned him to their Triple-A Worcester affiliate. Milwaukee had designated Gutierrez for assignment Wednesday. The Red Sox made room for Gutierrez on their 40-man roster by transferring shortstop Trevor Story to the 60-day injured list. Gutierrez, 28, didn’t appear in any games for the Brewers this season but did allow three runs over four innings for the Marlins in a 9-7, 10-inning loss to the Pirates on March 31.
COLLEGE SPORTS: FedEx has 5 pledged $25 million over the next five years to be used in sponsorship deals with University of Memphis athletes. The program is a huge boost for the school’s NIL compensation efforts. The Memphis-based shipping giant says the program initially will focus on football, men’s and women’s basketball and other women’s sports. The deal is for $5 million per year and believed to be the largest corporate NIL sponsorship in the nation. The Tigers compete in the AAC.
