First-team Associated Press All-American RJ Davis is returning to North Carolina to play his fifth season of eligibility, which could have him ultimately contending for the school and Atlantic Coast Conference career scoring record. The guard averaged 21.2 points to lead the ACC and rank 16th in Division I in scoring. He also shot 39.8% from 3-point range and 87.3% from the foul line in a big season that included going for 42 points against Miami to set a record for any player in the Smith Center, UNC’s home arena since January 1986.

PRO MEN’S GOLF:

Royal Troon will feature the longest hole in British Open history when the Ayrshire links hosts the event in Scotland for the 10th time in July. The par-5 sixth hole will be extended to 623 yards — 22 yards longer than in 2016, the last time Troon hosted. The 152nd Open is July 18-21. Two holes later, players could see the shortest hole as the famous “Postage Stamp” could be shortened to 99 yards, weather permitting. Overall, nine new tees were created to lengthen the course to 7,385 yards — an increase of 195 yards from eight years ago when Henrik Stenson captured the claret jug.

PRO BASEBALL:

Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty tied an American League record with seven straight strikeouts to open a game against the Cardinals on Tuesday and finished with a career-high 14 over 6⅔ innings in a 2-1 defeat. Flaherty matched the record shared by Joe Cowley of the 1986 White Sox, Carlos Rodón of the 2016 White Sox, Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell in 2018 and Seattle’s Luis Castillo two years ago. Marlins right-hander Pablo López set the major league record by striking out the first nine batters of a game in 2021.

PRO BASKETBALL:

Knicks swingman Bojan Bogdanovic will have surgery on his left foot and miss the rest of the playoffs. Bogdanovic, who had played well off the bench to help the Knicks take a 3-1 lead over the 76ers, was hurt Sunday when Nicolas Batum fell on his leg . ... Point guard Chelsea Gray signed a contract extension through 2025 to stay with two-time WNBA defending champion Las Vegas.
