NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS
■ At least 200 people were arrested at UCLA on Thursday, bringing the nationwide total of arrests to more than 2,000 at dozens of college campuses since police cleared an encampment at Columbia University in mid-April, according to a tally by The Associated Press. Chaotic scenes played out early Thursday at UCLA as officers in riot gear surged against a crowd of demonstrators, after hundreds of protesters defied orders to leave. Later Thursday, workers removed barricades and dismantled the protesters’ fortified encampment.
■ The Provost at Columbia University in New York says all final exams and any remaining classes should be held remotely. Any papers, projects or presentations due this week also are being delayed. The university has been paralyzed by demonstrations and is encouraging students to leave campus and go home early for the semester.
■ Upcoming graduations remain a concern. Florida’s state university chancellor ordered campus presidents to take whatever steps necessary to prevent disruption of ceremonies. Officials at some universities, including the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University near Chicago, have reached agreement with protesters not to disrupt commencements.
■ Several other protest encampments at schools across the U.S. were also cleared by police or closed up voluntarily.
■ Iranian state television carried live images of the police action at UCLA, as did Qatar’s pan-Arab Al Jazeera satellite network. Live images from Los Angeles also played across Israeli television networks.
