1 1 Sanders to seek reelection to 4th term:

Sen. Bernie Sanders, Independen­t-Vt., announced that he is running for reelection this year, ending months of speculatio­n over whether the second-oldest member of the Senate would retire or seek a fourth term. Sanders, 82, called the November election — which could include a rematch between presumptiv­e nominees President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump —“the most important national election in our lifetimes.” “We must fight to make sure that we remain a democracy, not an authoritar­ian society,” Sanders said.

2 Last-minute candidate wins Panama’s presidenti­al election:

José Raúl Mulino, the stand-in for former President Ricardo Martinelli in Panama’s presidenti­al election, will become the new leader of the Central American nation. The 64-year-old former security minister had nearly 35% of the votes with more than 92% of the votes counted, giving him a nine-point lead over his nearest competitor. Mulino replaced Martinelli as a candidate after the firebrand former leader was banned from running, having been sentenced to 10 years in prison for money laundering.

3 Germany recalls ambassador in Russia over cyberattac­k:

Germany said it recalled its ambassador to Russia for a week of consultati­ons in Berlin following an alleged cyberattac­k on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party. Germany last week accused Russian military agents of hacking into the top echelons of Scholz’s Social Democrats’ party and other sensitive government and industrial targets. The Foreign Office in Berlin said German Ambassador Alexander Lambsdorff would return to Moscow after a week.

4 Boeing set to launch NASA astronauts:

Boeing counted down for its first astronaut launch after years of struggle. NASA test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were slated to climb into Boeing’s Starliner capsule for a nighttime liftoff from Cape Canaveral to the Internatio­nal Space Station for a weeklong stay. Starliner’s debut test flight without a crew in 2019 ended up in the wrong orbit and failed to reach the space station, forcing Boeing to repeat the demo before astronauts could fly.

5 Qantas to pay $79 million for selling seats on canceled flights:

Qantas Airways agreed to pay 120 million Australian dollars ($79 million) in compensati­on and a fine for selling tickets on thousands of canceled flights, the airline said. The Australian Competitio­n and Consumer Commission alleged that Qantas engaged in false, misleading or deceptive conduct by advertisin­g tickets for more than 8,000 flights from May 2021 through July 2022 that had already been canceled.
