1 U.S. soldier awaiting hearing in Russia on theft charges:

The U.S. Army soldier arrested in Russia last week is being held in a pretrial detention facility waiting for a hearing, the Army said Tuesday. Staff Sgt. Gordon Black flew to Russia to see his girlfriend, according to U.S. officials, and the Army confirmed Tuesday that he had not sought clearance for the internatio­nal travel and it was not authorized by the Defense Department. Under Pentagon policy, service members must get clearance for any internatio­nal travel from a security manager or commander and that was not done.

2 Police investigat­ing shooting outside Drake’s mansion:

Police are investigat­ing a shooting outside rapper Drake’s mansion that left a security guard seriously wounded. Authoritie­s did not confirm whether Drake was at home at the time of the shooting, but said his team is cooperatin­g. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday in the affluent Bridle Path neighborho­od of Toronto. Toronto Police Inspector Paul Krawczyk said video of the shooting had been recovered but it was too early in the investigat­ion to talk about a possible motive for the shooting.

Rescuers contact workers alive 3 in deadly building collapse:

Rescue teams trying to find dozens of constructi­on workers missing since a multi-story apartment complex collapsed in a coastal city in South Africa have made contact with 11 people buried alive beneath the mangled wreckage, authoritie­s said Tuesday. At least six workers have been confirmed dead and there are fears that the death count could rise sharply.

4 Disney’s streaming business turns a profit:

The Walt Disney Co. swung to a loss in its second quarter because of restructur­ing and impairment charges, but its adjusted profit topped expectatio­ns and its streaming business turned a profit. The direct-to-consumer business, which includes Disney+ and Hulu, posted quarterly operating income of $47 million compared with a loss of $587 million a year earlier. For the combined streaming businesses, which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, second-quarter operating loss shrunk to $18 million from $659 million.

5 U.K.: Payroll data breach exposed military personnel:

The names and bank details of thousands of serving British soldiers, sailors and air force members have been exposed in a data breach by a“malign actor”who may have had state help, defense officials said Tuesday. The Ministry of Defense said the breach occurred at a third-party payroll system holding bank details of as many as 272,000 serving armed forces personnel and recent veterans.
