PRO BASEBALL: The Guardians are losing their extraordinary leadoff hitter for a stretch. Cleveland placed outfielder Steven Kwan, who leads the AL with a .353 average, on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain he sustained while running down a fly ball over the weekend. Kwan felt tightness in his hamstring and was pulled from Saturday’s win over the Angels as a precaution. An MRI revealed an acute strain and the Guardians said Kwan likely will be out for up to one month.

PRO BASEBALL: Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right posterior shoulder strain. Los Angeles made the move before its series opener against Miami. That opened a roster spot for Walker Buehler, who was reinstated from the IL to make his first major league start since June 10, 2022. Buehler has been recovering from his second Tommy John surgery in August 2022. Kelly got one out Sunday against the Braves. The veteran right-hander has a 4.37 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13⅓ innings over 15 appearances this season.

PRO FOOTBALL: The Los Angeles Chargers added some depth to their wide receiver room by signing DJ Chark Jr. on Monday. Chark had 35 receptions for 525 yards with Carolina last season, and led the team with five receiving touchdowns. He was a second-round pick by Jacksonville in 2018 and spent four seasons with the Jaguars before going to Detroit in 2022. Chark’s best season was in 2019, when he had 73 receptions for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns.

PRO TENNIS: A tennis player was awarded $9 million in damages by a jury in federal court in Florida after accusing the U.S. Tennis Association of failing to protect her from a coach she said sexually abused her at one of its training centers when she was a teenager. The lawsuit, filed by Kylie McKenzie in March 2022, said Anibal Aranda, who was employed by the sport’s national governing body for about seven years and later fired, used his position as a USTA coach to get access to vulnerable female athletes and commit sexual battery against them.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

Colorado coach Tad Boyle is adding basketball great Danny Manning to his coaching staff in a reunion of former Kansas teammates. Boyle and Manning spent a season together with the Jayhawks in 1984-85. Manning would later go on to lead Kansas to the 1988 NCAA championship, an improbable run that earned the team the nickname “Danny and the Miracles.”The addition of Manning comes as the Buffaloes prepare to rejoin the Big 12.
