QUICK HITS
1 Ballot drop boxes are back:
The Wisconsin Supreme Court is changing course and will allow officials to place ballot drop boxes in their communities for this fall’s elections in the presidential swing state. The court ruled in 2022 that absentee ballot drop boxes could be used only in election offices and that no one other than the voter could return a ballot in-person. Liberal justices gained control of the court last year, and a progressive voter group asked the court to reconsider. The court ruled 4-3 Friday that placing a ballot in a drop box equates to delivering it to a local election clerk, regardless of where the box is located.
2 Brazilian police indict ex-president:
Brazilian police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for money laundering and criminal association in connection with undeclared diamonds the far-right leader received from Saudi Arabia during his time in office. Brazil’s Supreme Court had yet to receive the police report with the indictment. Once it does, the country’s prosecutor-general will analyze the document and decide whether to file charges and force Bolsonaro to stand trial. The former president has denied wrongdoing.
3 Iran plans runoff: 3
Iran is holding a runoff presidential election pitting a hard-line former nuclear negotiator against a reformist lawmaker. Both men earlier struggled to compel a skeptical public to cast ballots in the first round, which saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history. State television aired images of modest lines at some polling centers. But online videos purported to show some polling stations empty, and a survey of several dozen sites in the capital, Tehran, saw light traffic amid a heavy security presence on the streets.
4 Orbán, Putin meet:
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has visited Moscow for a rare meeting by a European leader with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing peace proposals for Ukraine. The visit triggered condemnation from Kyiv and some European officials that Orbán had no mandate for discussions beyond bilateral relations. The visit came days after Orbán made a similar unannounced trip to Ukraine. Orbán is Putin’s closest partner in Europe.
