HOT CORNER
1 PRO BASEBALL:
Former Atlanta United executive Catie Griggs has resigned as president of business operations for the Seattle Mariners, the team announced Friday. Griggs arrived in Seattle in 2021 after four seasons as the chief business officer for the Five Stripes. She oversaw all aspects of the Mariners organization outside of baseball operations. At the time of her hiring, the team said Griggs was the only woman to hold a “president” title role with a club in the majors. The Mariners said Griggs is taking a new position on the East Coast to be closer to family.
2 SWIMMING:
The World Anti-Doping Agency says it is disappointed to learn of a U.S. criminal investigation into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who were allowed to continue competing despite testing positive for a banned substance in 2021. The Associated Press reported Thursday that U.S. investigators had launched a probe into the case and ordered a top official of the international swimming federation to testify. It could become the highest-profile use so far of a U.S. federal law passed in 2020 that allows investigations into suspected doping conspiracies even if they occurred outside the U.S.
3 PRO GOLF:
Hayden Springer posted the 14th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history on Thursday, joining a rapidly expanding list, with his eagle-birdie finish in the John Deere Classic for a 12-under 59. Springer shot 27 on the front nine and tried to block out thoughts of a 59 or better. Then he made five straight pars and figured the chance had passed until he holed a 55-yard shot for eagle on the par-5 17th. Needing a birdie for golf’s magic number, his approach left him 12 feet short, and the putt was true all the way.
4 PRO BASEBALL:
The Los Angeles Angels placed third baseman Luis Rengifo on the 10day injured list on Friday because of inflammation in his right wrist. Rengifo exited Wednesday’s game at Oakland after fouling a ball off his lower right arm near the wrist. He had an MRI on Friday. Rengifo ranked fifth in the majors with a .315 batting average and was tied for third in the American League with 22 steals.
5 PRO BASKETBALL:
Franz Wagner has agreed to the largest contract in Orlando Magic history, a five-year extension that will be worth at least $224 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday. The 22-year-old forward has averaged 17.8 points in his three seasons with the Magic. He averaged 15.2 points as a rookie before climbing to 18.6 and 19.7 over the last two seasons.
