The auditorium of Golden Ring Middle School was awash in pink as students and staff observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month during their Art for a Cause event on Wednesday, October 24.

The room was filled with artwork created by the students in their art classes that was sold to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

“So often we try to find ways for our students to connect with their curriculum. One of the ways that I find students can have a voice is through art,” said Golden Ring art teacher Camille Gibson.

The school hosts an Art for a Cause event every year. Last year’s event was focused on au- tism awareness.

Gibson said this event is one way students can make “meaningful changes” while bringing awareness to important issues and giving them “a platform for them to nurture their artistic abilities.”

She added that could not be more proud of her students for showing the community that there isn’t a limit to their capabilities.

During the ceremony, Gibson was presented a citation by Senator Kathy Klausmeier, recognizing her being named a career art teacher of the year by Baltimore County Public Schools earlier this year.

The money raised will go towards local organizations related to the theme of the fundraiser. This year’s recipient was Survivors Offering Support, a program through Franklin Square Hospital that connects breast cancer survivors with each other in order to support those who are going through treatment.

“Every single woman who has a breast cancer diagnosis at Franklin Square will get a phone call from me or a fellow mentor and we will the offer support and resources they’ll need moving forward,” said Ann Laughton, the manager of Survivors Offering Support. “Recovery is just the beginning, it’s a lifelong process. We want to support every woman for the rest of their lives,” she said.
