Give back this holiday season with BCPL’s toy drive
Last week, we spent the Thanksgiving holiday reflecting on and being grateful for all we have. Now, community members have a chance to give back and spread the love through the Annual Connecting the Community Toy Drive which is currently being held at all 19 Baltimore County Public Library branches.
Kicked off in early November, the toy drive will collect toys to be donated to various community-based nonprofits throughout Baltimore County.
All BCPL visitors are encouraged to leave new, unwrapped toys in the clearly displayed and festively decorative bins at all the library locations.
Adrith Bicchieri, the toy drive coordinator of BCPL, explained that every year each branch gets to decide which non-profit benefits for the donations.
“They’re looking for a place that helps to do the most good in the community and the best one that the community members should support,” she said.
For example, the Essex branch librar y will be collecting for St. John’s Lutheran Church on Franklin Ave. which will be having a toy giveaway on December 8 for families in need. The Rosedale branch library will partner with the Eastern Family Resource Center, a shelter that provides multiple resources for vulnerable people including child care and child development spaces and low-cost health and dental ser vices. Toys collected from the White Marsh branch will be given to the Eastside Family Emergency Shelter, another part of the Eastern Family Resource Center, and the Parkville-Carney branch will be giving donations to the House of Ruth Mar yland.
“Each branch has different needs and things they’re looking for,” said Bicchieri.
She added that in 2016, over 1,080 toys were collected county-wide with some of the larger branches bringing in over 150 individuals toys.
“While Baltimore County Public Library strives to provide the gift of opportunity each and every day to the citizens of Baltimore County,” said BCPL director Paula Miller, “it’s exciting to assist in providing children with something special and new for the holidays.”
The toy drive runs until December 7. For more information, visit www.bcpl. com.
