Man convicted of sexually abusing children in Lamont in-home day care

A man who operated a day care in McFarland was convicted by a jury this week on 10 felony charges of child molestatio­n and sex crimes against children, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Armando Villanueva, 57, faces life in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 9.

Over the course of a two month trial, evidence was presented showing he abused eight children at an in-home day care between 2006 and 2016.

“The abuse of children by those entrusted with their care will not be tolerated in our community,” said District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer in a news release. “Abuse of any child is unacceptab­le, and this case included multiple child victims.”

pleaded not guilty to four felonies related to the incident on Friday, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Bail for Jagmeet Sandhu, 23, was set at $1 million during his arraignmen­t in Kern County Superior Court, Deputy District Attorney Joseph Kinzel said.

Sandhu is charged with burglary, assault with a firearm, threatenin­g with intent to terrorize and domestic abuse, according to the Kern County Superior Court website.

Sandhu was taken into custody Wednesday after police received a report that a caller’s pregnant family member had been held at gunpoint and forced to ingest numerous pills to force a miscarriag­e, according to the Bakersfiel­d Police Department.

When BPD responded to a local hospital, they found the victim who confirmed the caller’s statement and had miscarried as a result of the incident, BPD said in a report.

Sandhu is next due in court Jan. 31.

The man killed in a shooting Thursday

morning at Motel 6 on Brundage Lane has been identified as Daniel Arturo Gil, 30, of Bakersfiel­d, according to the Kern County coroner’s office.

Gil was one of three men shot at the motel just before 7 a.m., according to police. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he died an hour later.

A man killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday on Ming Avenue has been identified as 24-year-old Jose Arturo Garcia of Lamont, according to the Kern County coroner’s office.

Garcia’s motorcycle collided with another vehicle around 1 p.m. Thursday and he died at the scene as a result of his injuries, the coroner’s news release said.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department is asking for the community’s help in locating a missing man who suffers from a medical condition.

Ramon Valdez-Magana, 64, was last seen at 4 a.m. Friday in the 2100 block of College Avenue, according to a news release.

He is described by police as Hispanic, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen wearing a brown coat and blue jeans.

Valdez-Magana is considered to be at-risk due to a medical condition.
