Kiwanis’ Cornhole Tournament set for Oct. 30

-

The Kiwanis Club of Kern has fundraising in the bag — the beanbag, that is — with its upcoming Cornhole Tournament on Oct. 30 at Stramler Park.

For its inaugural fundraising tournament, the club has collaborated with the California Cornhole Association, Reckless Cornhole, Cen-Cal Construction, GEO Drilling Fluids, RHL and CAPK for one of the largest tournaments in the Central Valley.

Cornhole, in which players try to toss a beanbag into a hole on a tilted platform, is an extremely social game that is popular at festivals and outdoor events. Its simple rules mean it can be enjoyed by players of varying skill levels and ages.

Yet don’t let the simplicity fool you: Organizers expect some players to be highly competitive, with cash prizes offered in the round robin-style play for the top three teams (of two) from the upper and lower brackets.

The tournament has room for 100 teams and players must be 12 or older. Teams can preregister for $75 at kernkiwanis.org/ cornhole-tournament.html. Spectators are welcome at the tournament, which will also offer food, music, a beer garden, family entertainment and more.

The tournament will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 30 at Stramler Park, 4003 Chester Ave. Attendees are asked to donate two items of canned food or other nonperishable food as their entrance fee, which will go toward the Kern Kiwanis and Community Action Partnership of Kern’s food drive to aid the Food Bank.

Proceeds from the event will aid Kern Kiwanis Foundation.

PANCHO BARRAZA TO PLAY FOX THEATER ON NOV. 13

Latino music star Pancho Barraza is headed to the Fox Theater on Nov. 13.

Born in Juan José Ríos in Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1961, Francisco Javier Barraza Rodríguez demonstrated his musical prowess at a young age by participating in local musical contests. In becoming a singer-songwriter, Barraza enrolled at the Bénemerita Escuela Normal to become a music instructor, and by age 22 he was teaching at a middle school in Villa Unión.

Around that time, Barraza joined the town’s church choir, and became a bassist for a group called Karisma. By the late 1980s, he’d immersed himself in the burgeoning scene of regional Mexican music along with Banda San Sebastian and Banda Camino, before making his mark with the now-famous Banda Sinaloense Los Recoditos in the genre’s hotbed of Mazatlán.

Los Recoditos released its debut in 1990, “A Bailar de Caballito,” with Barraza heading up the ensemble until 1995, when he launched his solo career with Mis Canciones de Amor, backed by Banda Santa María.

Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at 2001 H St. Tickets, from $69 to $249, are on sale at axs.com, by calling 661-324-1369 or at the Fox box office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays.
