Prescribed burn set today

The Kern County Fire Department will be conducting a prescribed burn today to increase public safety, weather permitting.

The prescribed burn is expected to take place from 4 p.m. to midnight near the intersecti­on of Highways 223 and 58, according to the KCFD news release.

During the prescribed burn, traffic along Highway 223 may be impacted.

Residents in the area may smell or see smoke. Whenever a fire is burning nearby, KCFD officials ask residents to stay extra vigilant with regard to keeping informed about changes in fire activity.

The KCFD also reminds residents that the hazard reduction-clearance deadline for properties is June 1.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a boy who died Saturday after he was found unresponsi­ve in a residentia­l swimming pool.

Oliver Michael Shine, 5, of Las Vegas, was found around 1 p.m. in a pool at a home in the 400 block of Penzance Drive in Bakersfiel­d.

He was taken to Bakersfiel­d Memorial Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department is investigat­ing the incident.

Kern County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigat­ing a body found Monday, near the railroad tracks in the 1400 block of North Chester Avenue, according to a KCSO news release.

The body was found with an apparent gunshot wound.

No other informatio­n, such as suspect informatio­n or the identity of the decedent, was immediatel­y available, according to the release.

The Kern County Probation Department’s Felony Probation Unit announced an arrest and seizure of firearms and drugs, in a news release Monday.

Officers assigned to the Kern County Probation Department’s Felony Probation Unit conducted a home call Thursday in the 300 block of Arvin Street in Bakersfiel­d.

While there, officers contacted 22-year-old Anthony Bishop, who is on Post Release Community Supervisio­n, and 34-year-old Chandra Jefferies, who is on mandatory supervisio­n probation. During a search, officers located a 12-gauge shotgun, a .38 special revolver, numerous caliber live ammunition, 4 grams of suspected methamphet­amine and other various weapons, according to a news release.

Bishop and Jefferies were arrested on suspicion of drug and weapon offenses, as well as a probation violation.

California Highway Patrol officers reported a man was killed Saturday in a single-car crash on East Belle Terrace.

A man was driving a 2004 Nissan east on East Belle Terrace, east of Bunting Drive, around 2:34 a.m., when he veered off the roadway and onto a dirt shoulder, according to a CHP report.

The Nissan began to travel out of control in a southeast direction, overturnin­g multiple times, the report noted. The driver, who was unrestrain­ed, was ejected from the car and sustained fatal injuries from the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unknown whether drugs and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released.

Bakersfiel­d Police Department officers reported a woman died as the result of a single-vehicle crash in the 3600 block of San Dimas Street on Saturday.

Lauraly Katie Alvarez, 18, was heading south on San Dimas around 11:57 a.m. when she lost control of the vehicle, which then struck a curb and overturned, according to a coroner’s office news release.

She was pronounced dead at Kern Medical at 12:26 p.m.

It’s unknown if drugs and alcohol are factors in this crash.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a woman killed Thursday in a collision on Highway 14.

Linda Jean Kracke, 71, of California­n City, died as the result of a traffic collision at 4:40 p.m. on Highway 14, north of Abbot Drive in Inyokern.

California Highway Patrol officers are investigat­ing the crash.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a man who was found dead in a vehicle with apparent traumatic injuries on Thursday.

Eduardo Moreno, 29, of Bakersfiel­d, was found at 11:59 p.m. The coroner’s report did not indicate when he died, it only stated when his body was found at the intersecti­on of Niles Street and Pesante Road.

The incident is under investigat­ion by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.

The Kern County coroner’s office identified a man who died Friday in a collision.

David Cortez, 39, of Wasco, died at 12:26 a.m. May 13, according to the report, after he was in a collision at the intersecti­on of White Lane and Hughes Lane in Bakersfiel­d. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The Bakersfiel­d Police Department is investigat­ing the collision.
