Superior Court appoints new commissioner

-

Kern County Superior Court announced Tuesday the appointment of a new court commissioner.

Court commissioners are selected by Superior Court judges to preside temporarily over certain cases. A judge’s same powers and duties will be conferred upon Sally Ackerknecht, the newly appointed commissioner. She will be sworn into office June 5.

Ackerknecht will preside over various case types as needed throughout Kern County, according to a news release.

She was hired by Superior Court in January 2023 to serve as a court attorney and a legal research attorney. While in this position, she served as a temporary judge in family, civil, criminal and traffic cases.

Ackerknecht also worked as a child support attorney for the Department of Child Support Services in Kern County from 2018 to 2023. Prior to this role, Ackerknecht

worked as a deputy public defender in Tulare County from 2011 to 2018.

An hourlong webinar starting at noon today will look at

management considerations facing small business owners.

Speaker and author Lorna Kibbey will speak with Kelly Bearden, director of

Cal State Bakersfield’s Small Business Development Center, about changes that occur when owners become leaders instead of managers.

Bearden will open the free online event with updates on the economy, programs providing capital resources and assistance for businesses that suffer weather-related disasters.

Questions will be taken live. Register to participate at www.tinyurl.com/BusinessRelief278.

At its most recent drop-off event on May 13, city offi

cials with Bakersfield’s Solid Waste Division reported a collection of more than 21,000 pounds of trash and recycling carted in by 310 vehicles.

This latest event is part of Bakersfield’s Clean City Initiative, funded by the Public Safety and Vital Services Tax, or Measure N.

The city has hosted the events monthly since January 2020, to combat illegal dumping.

In addition to the trash and recycling, residents dropped off 110 mattresses, eight tires and more than 430 various electronics.

The next scheduled event is Saturday, June 10, at the Kaiser Permanente Sports Village and at 4200 Panorama Drive.
