West High School on lockdown Tuesday
A West High School student fled the campus after a teacher and security guards found a gun in the student’s backpack at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to Kern High School District officials.
This is an ongoing investigation and the school was placed on lockdown while KHSD officers checked the school. The school district said in a statement that there will be extra security at West High School today.
A man stole several surveillance cameras
from Lumen, a business on Sumner Street, on Sept. 27, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
The police department said one of the surveillance cameras took a picture of the man, who is described as white and around 40 to 50 years old with short hair. This grand theft case is still under investigation.
A Bakersfield man whose clothes caught fire died
from burn wounds on Nov. 19, the Kern County Coroner’s Office reported Tuesday.
Rynaldo Jamaru Williams, 21, was found at about 7 p.m. Nov. 17 on North Chester Avenue with his clothes on fire and he was taken to the hospital.
The Coroner’s Office deemed Williams’ death an accident.
A man was hit by an Amtrak train and died
around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Bakersfield train station, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
Roy Cork, 58, of Bakersfield got stuck on the train tracks before he was hit by a train. The Union Pacific Railroad Police Department handled the investigation.
A Bakersfield man was convicted Thursday of
animal cruelty and vandalism after he stabbed and mutilated his neighbor’s dogs in April 2022, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.
Vincent Martinez of Bakersfield went into his neighbor’s backyard after her dogs, Bella and Rosco, would not stop barking at Martinez, who had been rattling the fence.
Martinez threatened his neighbor and she went inside and called the police, according to the DA’s office.
When she heard Bella whimpering, she went back outside to see that Bella had been stabbed in the neck and Rosco had been mutilated by Martinez.
Bella survived but will suffer lifelong injuries from the incident, but Rosco was put down due to his injuries.
Martinez could face up to eight years and eight months in prison at his Jan. 24 sentencing.
The Bakersfield Police Department is looking
for a man who stole $12.35 in coins from an ATM at about 1 a.m. Oct. 29 at Bank of the Sierra on Mount Vernon Avenue.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the man pried open and damaged the ATM before stealing the coins.
The man is described as Hispanic, around 30 to 40 years old, medium build and around 5 feet and 8 inches tall with a beard, based on a surveillance photograph.
