West Sacramento – Myrna Elsa Garza, a devoted mother, grandmother, and faithful believer in Christ, passed away at the age of 87 on December 1, 2023. Her journey on this earth was marked by love and unwavering support of her family and community.

Myrna was born in Coleman, Texas in 1936, the daughter of Sarah Castro and Refugio Garza. She relocated to Bakersfield, California at a very young age and worked as a migrant farmworker until age 16. With a well established work ethic, she later became a chauffeur for a medical doctor, a laundromat attendant, a Community Contact Aide for Bakersfield City Schools, and eventually an account clerk for the Kern County Tax Collector's office where she retired after 20 years of service.

In her adult years, Myrna was an advocate in the community. She directed a Traditional Mexican dance group which was monumental in supporting marginalized students and parents in Bakersfield. She was consistently involved in an International Catholic Movement called Cursillo, consistently volunteered to feed the homeless, and donated to more than a dozen charities at the time of her passing.

Myrna provided endless love and guidance for her children Cynthia Reyes, Paul Reyes, Raul Reyes, and Roxana Reyes. She welcomed her children in marriage, who she referred to as her daughters-in-love, Justine Reyes, Veronica Moser Reyes, and her son-in-love, Clemente Jimenez.

She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Joshua Reyes, Justin Reyes, Ryan Reyes, Megan Reyes, Jullian Reyes, Justice Reyes, Marissa Reyes, Easton Reyes, Cesar Reyes Borrego, Trini Reyes, Sofia Reyes Borrego, Maricella Reyes and her great-grandchildren Kodi Reyes, Everleigh Reyes, Cayden Perreira Reyes, Rhylan Reyes, Alexandrea Reyes, Mariana Perreira Reyes, Adelena Perreira Reyes, Alexis Reyes, Madison Reyes, McKenzie Reyes, and Julian Reyes.

Myrna requested she be laid to rest in the color white. The family invites you to honor Myrna by adding something white to your attire at the services. Rosary and viewing will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, 4pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home located at 3700 River Blvd. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, 2pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
