Bakersfield – Lane Howell, age 98, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023. He was a gentleman. A man of honor, integrity and had a witty sense of humor. He was born in Fairfax, Oklahoma on November 25, 1925, to Charles and Beatrice Howell. Lane grew up in Ponca City, Oklahoma. At age 18 he was sworn into the U.S. Navy during wartime. After the war, he met and married the love of his life, Jody Pippin. They were married for 67 years when Jody passed away. Lane attended the University of Louisiana; Tulane University and the University of Oklahoma. He earned his geology degree and began a lengthy career in the oil industry as a geophysicist, which, after moving numerous times, brought him to Bakersfield in 1968.

Lane began playing golf at age 1 to spend time with his father, a high school football and golf coach. He continued playing golf throughout his career and well into his retirement, winning numerous prestigious tournament titles. He is a four-time Stockdale Country Club champion; he won the Western Senior Amateur Tournament; the World Series Super Senior Championship two times; and the Pacific Senior Championships in 1999 and 2006. He was honored and proud to be inducted into the Bob Elias Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. He also shot his age or better over 1500 times, beginning first at age 67. He had the joy and privilege of attending the Honor Flight with his son, Charlie Howell. Lane loved the Lord and by example, led his family. He would speak the truth in love; serve others; ask questions; display compassion; model curiosity; encourage the heart; and seek the Lord's direction and guidance in prayer. His conversations (even until the day he passed away) were lively, spirited and full of witty humor and amusing observations.

Lane and his cherished cousin, Wayne Williams (wife Nancy), from Alvin, Texas, spoke every day via FaceTime. Lane so enjoyed visiting and sharing stories and memories with Wayne. The family would like to thank Lane's wonderful caregivers who lifted his spirits and brought him great joy: Rick Forzetting, Marie Tessman and Carmen Hernandez.

Lane is survived by his daughter, Cindy Trueblood (husband Kevin); daughterin-law, LaNell Howell; three grandchildren, Tyler Trueblood (wife Jean); Mason Trueblood (wife Justene); Kelley Morris (fiance' Rod Taylor); and one greatgrandson, Sam Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Jody Howell; and his beloved son, Charlie Howell.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 1:00pm at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd. There will be a reception to follow at Stockdale Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue or Honor Flight Kern County.
