Fun pizzas for kids, seasonal dinners on tap

- BY STEFANI DIAS sdias@bakersfield.com

There’s plenty of news in the local dining scene to cover but I’d be remiss if I didn’t kick off with this fun addition from Slice of Italy.

Although we may have moved past the season of heart-shaped pizzas, this local spot is not sticking with simple geometry.

In addition to traditional pies, the Slice of Italy in Rosedale is offering themed kids pizza in animal shapes.

Treat your young diners to a cat- or fish-shaped pizza that can be customized with their favorite toppings.

The personal pizzas are $10 each and must be ordered in store or by calling 661-589-1000.

These specialty pies are only available at the location at 10524 Hageman Road.

SMOOTH DINNER PLANS

The Kitchen has partnered with OH Ohanneson Olive Oil for

a series of early spring dinners this month.

The olive oil is made by Ty Ohanneson, a fifth-generation family farmer in the San Joaquin Valley.

Highlighting a locally made product is The Kitchen’s specialty and this menu is no exception with a starter of savory oats with roasted cauliflower, fava beans and smoked salt.

That’s followed by a course of split pea soup with braised pork belly.

The main dish is OH Olive Oil roasted chicken with vanilla bean beurre blanc and a barigoule of spring vegetables

For dessert, diners will be served a hazelnut olive oil cake.

Dinners started March 1 but availability remains open for the March 8 and 22 dinners at the 7 and 7:30 p.m. seatings.

Cost is $60, not including tax and tip. Diners can also order wine, beer or nonalcoholic drinks for an additional charge.

Those who would like to dine at home can opt for the takeout dinner ($42) with pickup from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at the venue, 1317 20th St.

Visit thekitchenbakersfield.com for reservations.

TIME FOR TOMAHAWKS

Chef Lino Gonzales and his staff are hard at work planning the next Tomahawk Night on

April 18 at the Pour House Bar & Grill.

Gonzales will cook the massive steaks — prepared in a variety of marinades — on the patio in front of diners, who will also enjoy appetizers, a buffet of side dishes and complimentary tequila samples.

The evening will also include live music.

Seating begins at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:45 p.m. April 18

at the restaurant and bar, 4041 Fruitvale Ave.

Diners must be 21 or older (with valid ID) to attend.

Tickets are $85 per person and are available by calling 661-437-2232 or 661-589-9300 or at cheflinocreates.com.

ON THE MOVE

Que Pasa celebrated its last Taco Tuesday at its location in The Marketplace, which it had called home for 25 years.

Now the Mexican restaurant is gearing up to take over the former home of Frugatti’s in the plaza at 600 Coffee Road. (The popular Italian spot has already moved into the spacious new digs it built down the road at 8109 Brimhall Road.)

It promises its new location, which does not yet have an opening date, will be “a place where every visit feels like a fiesta, and every dish tastes like home.”

Moving in soon is a new Harris BBQ inside Sully’s on Coffee Road. The business takes over the spot vacated last year by PorkChop & Bubba’s BBQ.

Harris BBQ is an offshoot of Harris Ranch in Coalinga, which will also open a second Harris BBQ location at the Shoppes at Oaks Business Park at Buena Vista Road and Bolthouse Drive later this year.
