Man dies in O Street apartment fire

A 71-year-old man died in a residentia­l fire Wednesday night that is under investigat­ion by the arson division, according to the Bakersfiel­d Fire Department.

Firefighte­rs were dispatched just before 8 p.m. to an emergency medical call in the 1000 block of O Street and then the Emergency Communicat­ion Center began receiving reports of a structure fire there. A full structure response was dispatched.

Crews found the man unconsciou­s and unresponsi­ve in the apartment, with light to moderate smoke present, but no visible flames, the BFD reported. The man was given advanced life support treatment, but he died.

A patrol car driven by a Bakersfiel­d Police Department officer and the driver and passenger in a second vehicle suffered minor injuries after colliding shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the BPD.

Police said a preliminar­y investigat­ion shows the officer was traveling east in the 10 block of Brundage Lane approachin­g the intersecti­on of Liggett Street and the Highway 58 on-ramp/ off-ramp when a red Hyundai sedan made a westbound to southbound left turn and a collision occurred.

The 10 block of East Brundage Lane is an east/west road; the intersecti­on is controlled by automated traffic signals. There are no designated lefthand turn signals. Drivers conducting left turns at this intersecti­on must yield the right of way for through traffic, the BPD said.

After he barricaded himself in a house in Rosamond, a man was arrested by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of resisting arrest, violating a court order, making criminal threats and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

According to the KCSO, deputies received a report that Joseph Nelson, 24, violated his restrainin­g order. Deputies went to a home in the 3300 block of 15th Street West around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday when Nelson barricaded himself in the house and refused to come out.

After negotiatin­g with Nelson, he came out and deputies arrested him and booked him into Lerdo jail, according to the KCSO.
