Cataldo’s opens in Oleander; new burger deals on tap

- BY STEFANI DIAS sdias@bakersfield.com

Sometimes when you can’t decide on what you’d like to eat, you end up assembling a meal from little bits of everything that sounds good.

When writing, like meal prep, seems like a daunting task, it pays to just gather some quick bites and let the chips (and guac) fall where they may.

What follows is a roundup of new arrivals among businesses and menu items at local spots.

WHAT A CATCH!

Head over to At C Fresh (920 California Ave., Suite A) to celebrate the restaurant’s third anniversary with a spicy treat.

Dine-in guests can enjoy a free side of Cajun fries at the seafood-forward spot located near Maya Cinemas with purchase of an entree.

Mention “Happy Anniversary” to a server to redeem the deal that is available now through March 23 for dine-in orders.

“We appreciate you being a part of our journey and hope you enjoy this small token of our gratitude,” the local eatery shared in an Instagram post.

FRESH SLICE

It’s always a relief when a new business is able to occupy a building that has been standing derelict. The latest is Cataldo’s Pizza Express, which moved its operation from Stine Road to take over the space last home to The Pantry on Brundage Lane.

Currently open from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, the pizza spot is offering daily specials that it posts on its Facebook page (@CataldosPizzeriaStineRoad).

The restaurant also shared its hours will expand when it hires more staff.

Cataldo’s Pizza Express is located at 2200 Brundage Lane. Call 661-397-5000 to order.

MEAL DEALS

We all need to eat but it’s getting tougher to stomach some of the tabs we run up especially at fast-food spots.

The Habit Burger Grill

knows some customers look to the kids menu for cheaper options. The Irvine-based chain’s survey of 2,000 adults found that

three-quarters of them support grown-ups ordering from the kids’ menu but most are too embarrassed to do so themselves.

According to the survey, only 20% said they’d actually ordered a children’s meal for themselves.

Taking the stigma out of saving some change, The Habit is offering the Grown-Up Meal. For $6, diners can get a full-sized Charburger, small fries, regular drink and a plastic-wrapped mini gummy burger treat.

The price is cheaper than the current kids’ meal, which ranges from $6.25 to $7.19 at Bakersfield locations.

“We’ve spotted a trend: Savvy adults covertly ordering off the kids’ menu to manage expenses,” The Habit’s Chief Marketing Officer Jack Hinchliffe said in a statement. “But why the hush-hush? We say, own it! That’s why we’re flipping the script by allowing grownups to experience kids’ meals, offering the savings of a kid’s meal without compromising on portion size.”

Bakersfield’s Habit locations are at 3900 California Ave.; 5503 Calloway Drive; 6326 Ashe Road, Suite 100; and 12900 Brimhall Road, Suite 300.

Farmer Boys (4920 Gosford Road) is also aiming to offer some relief to our wallets with The Big Cheese Box.

Billed as “the best combo of the year,” the $7.99 box includes a Big Cheese — a quarter-pound 100% USDA fire-grilled beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, freshly sliced tomato, dill pickles, diced onion and housemade Thousand Island dressing on a premium brioche bun — along with a half order of fries and a regular 22-ounce drink.

Hungrier diners can opt for The Double Big Cheese Box ($9.99) with twice the meat and cheese on the burger.

The offer will be available for a limited time.

Farmer Boys is fundraising for long-time charitable partners; Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, UMC of Southern Nevada Children’s Hospital and Phoenix Children’s Foundation. For every vanilla cold brew or coffee ordered through March 25th, the chain will donate 50 cents to benefit youth health and wellness.

MAKE THAT SODA DIRTY

We’ve to determine the fate of TikTok but we can measure some of its influence.

The social media platform is considered responsible for a viral beverage — dirty soda — that has spawned a new product from Coffee mate.

The creamer maker partnered with Dr Pepper on the Coffee mate Dirty Soda Coconut Lime Flavored Creamer.

Making it easier for beverage lovers to make the creation, which is normally made with carbonated soda, a splash of creamer and flavored syrup, this creamer combines notes of refreshing coconut and zesty lime flavors.

Coffee mate aims to help customers explore options beyond their morning coffee with “more flavor, more indulgence, and more opportunities to experiment,” according to Leonardo Aizpuru, Nestlé vice president of brand marketing for the beverage division and business unit.

“We are excited to collaborate with Dr Pepper merging the worlds of coffee creamer and soda, making it easy to make the viral Dirty Soda trend that’s taken the world by storm,” Aizpuru said in a news release. “We know that Coffee mate fans love Dr Pepper so we’re excited to introduce this iconic partnership as an easy way for our brands to deliver the convenience of flavor and fun at home.”

The new creamer, which retails for $3.29 for a 16-fluid ounce bottle, will be available for a limited time.

SWEET RETURN FOR PRINGLES

No stranger to offering unique flavors, Pringles has brought back a more classic offering to stores.

Based on a social media fan campaign, the chip maker has brought back Pringles Honey Mustard to its permanent lineup.

The chip balances tangy mustard with subtle sweet hints of honey along with a blend of garlic and spices.

“Pringles Honey Mustard has an incredibly passionate fanbase, in fact it was our most asked-for flavor from the brand in the last two years,” Mauricio Jenkins, U.S. marketing lead for Pringles, said in a news release. “Our die-hard fans’ efforts paid off and the delicious tangy and subtly sweet Pringles Honey Mustard crisps are returning to shelves ... for good!”
