A court hearing for a man suspected of shooting at a family in a car in 2021, killing a 10-year-old girl, was postponed until May during a pre-preliminary hearing Monday in Kern County Superior Court.

Jesus Everardo Rodriguez Haros, now 20, pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder, two counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle and one count of participating in a street gang.

At the time of the shooting, Rodriguez Haros was 17. He was charged March 11 as an adult. Rodriguez Haros appeared in court Monday with his defense attorney Jesse Whitten.

Judge Colette Humphrey said at Monday’s hearing that, because Rodriguez Haros is being charged as an adult, he could face life without parole if convicted.

The Californian previously reported Liliana Jimenez, 10, died after she was shot near North Hill Street in Arvin on July 17, 2021. Her brother Christian Jimenez and her father were also shot.

According to a probable cause statement provided to the court by the Arvin Police Department, Rodriguez Haros and another person drove next to the victims’ car and shot into the car. Rodriguez Haros was later arrested in September 2021; the other person has not been identified or arrested.

According to the statement, Rodriguez Haros previously committed a homicide with a juvenile from a street gang he participated in while living in Lamont. His juvenile probation officer confirmed to Arvin PD that Rodriguez Haros was in a street gang.

Rodriguez Haros is scheduled to return to court May 13 for his pre-preliminary hearing.

His preliminary hearing is set for May 14. He is being held without bail.
