Dismissal of climate change disrespects scientific way
In response to George Harmer’s dismissal of climate change concerns as mere fearmongering (“Climate cult: Next big money grab California will experience,” Community Voices, March 26), it is crucial to emphasize that the discourse around climate change is grounded in decades of meticulous scientific research rather than an attempt to manipulate through fear. The Lancet Countdown on health and climate change illustrates this with undeniable evidence of climate change’s impact on human health, highlighting increased risks from heat stress, air pollution and diseases. These are not hypothetical scenarios but are realities confirmed by extensive peer-reviewed research, not to mention everyday observations all around us in our physical world.
Claims that the scientific community manipulates findings for control or profit fundamentally misunderstand the nature of scientific inquiry, which is built on rigorous scrutiny, peer review and the principle that conclusions are always open to revision with new evidence. The criticism directed at the petroleum industry, for example, is based on data showing clear links between oil well proximity and health issues, underscoring a public health concern rather than a smear campaign.
To dismiss the broad scientific consensus on climate change as a conspiracy not only disrespects the scientific method but also overlooks the urgent threats climate change poses to our planet and future generations. The real issue at hand is not about creating fear but addressing the critical challenges of climate change head-on, for the health and well-being of all. — Ian Journey, Bakersfield
