BAA Art Center displays work of students from North, West High
Along with the creations of the group show of plein air works, the Bakersfield Art Association’s Art Center will host an exhibition featuring the work of local high school students.
Lisa Mayo, Highland High School teacher and visual and performing arts department chair, continues to coordinate this partnership with the BAA, which has been hosting student shows since 2021.
This collection features artwork by West High students from instructor Beth Chaney’s graphic arts class, as well as her intermediate and advanced classes.
Also on display is a stunning array of artwork from North High students from classes of Asma Salehi.
Each piece is “a testament to their unique perspectives and creative abilities,” according to a BAA news release.
For her two-point perspective piece “A Japanese City,” North High freshman Makenna Wilder took inspiration from Japanese cities and pictures of Japanese cities. Her work depicts a corner lot of a city.
North High senior Ruby Bell Roby was driven by her passions for her mosaic “Guppy Fish.”
“This artwork was inspired by my love for fish and the sea with its different sea creatures and colorful life.”
Fellow North senior Noah Brummett went out on a limb for “The Oculus,” his first abstract artwork.
Of his nonrepresentational abstract, he wrote “colors are used to portray emotions and lines are used to express those emotions.”
Lucian Summers, a senior at North High, offered a one-point perspective in “City Escape.”
“What makes this artwork unique is the use of lines to add value,” he wrote. “I often sketch with pen, and I see the similar quality of lines used in the artwork because of the vertical hatching.”
The student show will hold receptions from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It will remain on display through the month at the BAA Art Center, 1607 19th St.
