CHARLES WAYNE DEVIN

June 23, 1943 – March 25, 2024

-

Charles Wayne Devin (Charlie) was born on June 23, 1943, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Wayne and Grace Devin and was one of four children. He passed away on March 25, 2024, in Bakersfield, California at the age of 80.

Charlie is survived by his sister Patricia Devin, son Jimmy Devin (wife Angela Devin), grandchildren Ashley Devin, Jordon Azevedo, Hunter Devin, Claire Pratt and Chloe Sizemore.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Grace Devin, brother Jim Devin, sister Tonya McClure and wife of 51 years, Virginia Devin.

Charlie attended Arvin Elementary schools and Arvin High School. As a young boy, he worked in the fields picking cotton and produce. In the early years, when he was too small to pick potatoes, he drove the truck through the fields so it could be loaded with filled potato sacks. After high school, he went to work as a clerk in a local grocery store.

In 1970 Charles married Virginia (Gina) Maye Baker. For their honeymoon, they backpacked and fished on the upper forks of the Kern River. They started their life together in the Stockdale area where Jimmy was born. In 1979 they moved to Rosedale where they spent the rest of their years. Their home sat on a one acre property where they had horses, using them for hunting and ranching. They also ran cattle on leased property in the Kelso Valley, where they enjoyed watching their herd grow, holding brandings with family and friends. Charlie's lifelong passion was hunting, starting back in high school when someone gave him a gun. Jimmy remembers him talking about that gun, saying it didn't have a scope and was missing the front sight. Dad said he'd shoot a whole box of bullets every time he went out and never hit a damn thing. It wasn't long before he met another guy that liked to hunt. From him, he learned what a good rifle (Winchester pre 64 model 70) with a quality scope was and how to load his own bullets. That was a game changer and the beginning of a lifetime of successful hunting trips. He hunted mostly deer and pigs in California, along with deer and elk in most of the western United States. Over the 55 years of hunting, Charlie was able to take several quality bucks.

In July 1972 Charlie joined the Operating Engineers Union Local 12 while working for Bakersfield Ready Mix. In August 1979 he went to work for Granite Construction Company and retired from there in October 1999 at the age of 56.

Charlie spent 51 years of marriage with Gina by his side, working and hunting together. Son Jimmy was always with his parents, hunting anywhere and everywhere they could. If Dad and one of his buddies went hunting or to do anything else, Jimmy went too. Charlie was not only a DAD to his son, but he was also his friend and biggest supporter.

“Grandpa” Charlie loved all his grandchildren. He attended most of their sports practices through grade school and high school. He never missed a game, in or out of town. Grandpa was always there to watch and support his grandchildren.
