Man charged in cold case killing from 2017
A man was charged Friday with a 2017 southeast Bakersfield murder and other crimes after the Bakersfield Police Department interviewed him about an unrelated case.
Jemiah Dawson, 28, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a crime and participation in a street gang in an Oct. 7, 2017, incident at 249 S. King St. He is suspected of being one of three people involved.
Police said Maurice Wright was killed and a woman was injured.
Wright and his girlfriend were leaving a convenience store after purchasing food for their daughter’s birthday party when three suspects shot at them from a car, said Sgt. Eric Celedon, the public information officer for BPD.
Dawson and two other suspects drove away in a stolen car, which was located in the 3500 block of Shellmacher Avenue, according to BPD. Celedon said the two other suspects have not been arrested and BPD is still building its case to secure an arrest warrant.

Kern County District Attorney’s Office investigators and Kern High School District police arrested a woman for charges related to drug sales in east Bakersfield.
According to the DA, investigators searched a home in the 3000 block of Cornell Street and found a half a pound of methamphetamine, $6,700 cash, 100 packs of synthetic narcotics, fentanyl pills and other evidence related to drug sales.
Investigators arrested Irene Sanchez, 55, according to the DA.
The Kern County Probation Department arrested a man on suspicion of drugs and firearm related charges following a search of a home in the 900 block of South Union Avenue Tuesday.
Joel Gonzalez, 48, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance for sale, possessing a firearm as a felon and violating his post-release supervision, according to the Probation Department.
Probation officers said they found a 12 gauge shotgun, 3.5 ounces of suspected methamphetamine and various calibers and ammunition at Gonzalez’s home.
