Downtown is going to the dogs this Saturday.

Two Goats & The Goose and Guthrie’s Alley Cat have teamed with local rescue organizations for the Canines and Cocktails adoption event in Wall Street Alley.

H.A.L.T. (Helping Animals Live Tomorrow) Dog Rescue is working with Bakersfield Strays and Fur N Feathers Mill Creek for the event featuring dogs looking for their forever homes.

H.A.L.T. will bring a number of canines for attendees to meet while also sharing more about the work it does in the community. Bakersfield Strays will also share more about its mission to aid abandoned dogs.

Fur N Feathers will set up a vendor booth at the pop-up.

Guthrie’s Alley Cat will hold a Jell-O shot fundraiser of shots for $2, with all proceeds going to local rescue efforts.

Two Goats & The Goose will offer pineapple serrano margaritas and mai tais for $6 each as well as garlic fries for $3.

Owner Shawna Haddad-Byers said with city and county shelters in crisis where demand for housing exceeds capacity, she felt compelled to help the cause.

“We’re also fighting another huge problem of people in our community dumping, neglecting and abandoning their pets,” she wrote in a text. “Leaving dogs in fields, parks & highways. Throwing puppies in dumpsters and ... tying them to benches etc in parks or in leaving them alone and behind in their homes/apartments and moving away.”

Haddad-Byers fostered two dogs from the same litter who she said were abandoned by a woman at different locations all over town.

“My foster dog Charlee was found in an orchard in freezing temperatures when he was 11 weeks old. His brother Frank was found behind a dumpster & attacked. He was so traumatized but after lots of time, patience & love he became a sweet happy trusting boy again.”

H.A.L.T. is also using Saturday’s event as an early kick-off for its Give Big Kern campaign to raise funds and awareness for the nonprofit and its rescue efforts. It will sell raffle tickets for an array of themed baskets it will be giving away.

Guests can also donate dog food, blankets, towels, toys, dog accessories and cash.

Canines and Cocktails will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1514 Wall Street Alley.
