Raymond Peter Maranda, "Ray " passed away, at 84, peacefully at home amongst family on April 16, 2024.

A cherished Husband, father and grandfathe­r, Ray grew up in St.Paul, MN. Moving to Bakersfiel­d after High School graduation in 1957 he attended Bakersfiel­d College where he lettered in cross country. In 1958 he joined the Army and continued his passion for running by competing in service sponsored events. After his military service he returned to Bakersfiel­d and began a 38 year career as an Athletic Trainer and Equipment Manager. Beginning at Foothill High School in 1962, he then moved on to East, and finally moved on to Bakersfiel­d College in 1975 until his retirement in 2000. During his career he developed many life-long friendship­s and influenced many people.

His love of running was a life-long passion that allowed him to compete at a high level in many races including the famous Boston Marathon. One of his most cherished running memories was being chosen to carry the Olympic Torch for its travel to the 1984 Summer Olympic games in Los Angeles.

Ray leaves behind his beloved wife of 17 years, Chris; son Michael (Tami); stepdaught­ers Kim (Joe) Daniels and Kristel (James) Edwards; stepsons Chad (Nikki) Hitchcock and Cory Hitchcock; many grandchild­ren; sister-in-law Francis "Pug" Maranda as well as many relatives and dear friends.

Ray was preceded in death by brothers; William and Robert Maranda and sister, Elizabeth Listner.

Your infectious smile, laughter and hugs will be missed. We love you. Services will be held: May 1, 2024, 10:00 AM, Bakersfiel­d National Cemetery 30338 E. Bear Mountain Blvd.
