Betty Cois­son Bush, wife of Ivan Bush of Hil­ton Head Is­land, SC, passed away peace­fully at home on Novem­ber 6, 2018 sur­rounded by her fam­ily af­ter a coura­geous bat­tle with Mul­ti­ple Myeloma. She was born Novem­ber 22, 1929, the daugh­ter of At­tilio and Ce­line Cairus Cois­son.

Betty grew up in New York City in a close-knit com­mu­nity of the First Walden­sian Church of NY. She is a grad­u­ate of the Kather­ine Gibbs School of Sec­re­tar­ial & Ex­ec­u­tive Train­ing in NYC, and worked at the Rock­e­feller In­sti­tute and IBM. On De­cem­ber 22, 1953 she mar­ried Ivan, a USAF pilot, and even­tu­ally set­tled in Xe­nia, Ohio to raise their fam­ily. Betty was a wife, mother, part-time ex­ec­u­tive sec­re­tary, and had a cre­ative & artis­tic side, of­ten teach­ing classes in var­i­ous nee­dle arts.

While liv­ing in Xe­nia, Betty and her fam­ily spent many sum­mers at Lucerne-in­Maine deep­en­ing re­la­tions with dear friends, and even­tu­ally built a sum­mer home for re­tire­ment. They re­lo­cated to Hil­ton Head Is­land, SC, where she was ac­tive in the Phil­an­thropic Ed­u­ca­tion Or­ga­ni­za­tion (P.E.O.), The Yacht Club of Hil­ton Head Is­land, The Bar­gain Box, and The Arts Cen­ter. She spent many happy hours with friends play­ing Bridge, Mah Jongg, and cre­at­ing minia­tures. She is re­mem­bered by her many friends from Maine to South Carolina as some­one who had an in­fec­tious laugh and sense of hu­mor, al­ways will­ing to help, a model host­ess, a hum­ble spirit, and truly de­voted friend.

Betty was pre­de­ceased by her par­ents and older brother Guido Cois­son. She is sur­vived by Ivan, her hus­band of 65 years, her brother Robert Cois­son of Ul­ster Park, NY, her chil­dren Laura Ce­line Bush of Bluffton, SC, Bob (& Betsy) Bush of Glas­ton­bury, CT, and Lib­bie (& Kris) An­der­son of Phipps­burg, Maine, and af­fec­tion­ately known as “Blue­berry Grandma” by her grand­chil­dren; Alyson Soward, Daniel, Jenny, and Anna Bush, and Max, Greta, and Gus An­der­son.

Me­mo­rial ser­vices will be held at the Cy­press of Hil­ton Head on Sun­day, Novem­ber 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Grave­side ser­vices will be at a later date in High­land Mills, NY.

In lieu of flow­ers, do­na­tions for the P.E.O. STAR Schol­ar­ship may be made out to P.E.O. Chap­ter V, and sent to Elaine Shinn, 43 Oyster Reef Dr. HHI, SC, 29926, or to a char­ity of your choice.
