UCF: Coach Josh Heupel defied expectations after replacing Scott Frost this season and was rewarded for helping the Knights post a 12-0 record and win an American Athletic Conference title during his first season, inking a contract extension. Heupel’s new deal with the Knights runs through Jan. 15, 2024. Financial terms of agreement were not immediately released Friday. Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech hired Temple coach Geoff Collins, choosing a Georgia native with a background in defense to replace Paul Johnson as the Yellow Jackets coach. Collins, 47, is a former Florida and Mississippi State defensive coordinator and Georgia Tech assistant who was 15-10 in two seasons at Temple. Liberty: Hugh Freeze was introduced as coach. The job gives Freeze a second chance after his volatile five-year run at Ole Miss ended in NCAA violations and scandal in 2017.
East Carolina: New coach Mike Houston is bringing eight of his coaches from James Madison to the Pirates’ staff. Among the five offensive coaches and three defensive coaches are coming from James Madison are offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick and offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler, both of whom have previously coached at East Carolina. Houston also will retain cornerbacks coach Brandon Lynch from the previous staff. Duke: The NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to injured defensive tackle Edgar Cerenord.
Big 12: Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is the unanimous pick for The Associated Press Big 12 offensive player of the year, the fourth consecutive season a player from the conference champion Sooners has won the honor. Murray, a Heisman Trophy finalist who this week was also named the AP’s national player of the year, was one of a leaguehigh six first-team picks from Oklahoma on the AP All-Big 12 team announced Friday.
