What to know about Justin Jarvis, whom Mets received for Canha
One of the biggest areas of need for the Mets heading into Tuesday’s trade deadline was organizational pitching depth.
The Mets are hoping they took a step toward addressing that void on Monday night as they sent outfielder Mark Canha and cash considerations to the Brewers in exchange for 23-year-old righthander Justin Jarvis.
Jarvis was the Brewers’ No. 12 prospect in Baseball America’s midseason prospect rankings. He was instantly slotted in as the Mets’ No. 13 prospect, according to the MLB Pipeline.
Jarvis started the 2023 season with Double-A Biloxi where he posted a 6-4 record with a 3.33 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 752⁄3 innings. The 6-foot-2 righty made three starts with Triple-A Nashville in July, posting an 0-2 record with a 10.80 ERA in 112⁄3 innings.
The North Carolina native was drafted by the Brewers out of Mooresville High School in the fifth round of the 2018 MLB draft. He has taken a step forward in the minor league ranks in each of his seasons since being drafted.
According to Baseball America, Jarvis’ fastball lingers in the mid-90s and he relies on his slider as a secondary pitch while adding a splitter and a curveball to the mix. The fastball, which rides up in the zone, and splitter grade out as above average (55) by MLB Pipeline.
Last season in 28 starts between High-A Wisconsin and Biloxi, Jarvis was 11-9 with a 3.83 ERA with 150 strikeouts in 141 innings.
Jarvis is now the Mets’ sixth-ranked pitching prospect behind Blade Tidwell, Dominic Hamel, Calvin Ziegler, Mike Vasil and Joel Diaz, respectively.
