Last week, the New Jersey Department of the Treasury started sending direct deposit payments for the second year of the ANCHOR program.

New Jersey has issued more than 950,000 payments.

There were more than 1.3 million taxpayers who didn’t have to file an application because they had been approved for the first year of the program, according to Treasury.

Those who haven’t gotten a payment yet shouldn’t worry, though.

Danielle Currie, a spokesperson for the department, noted that because of a “large number of residents receiving benefits automatically this season, ANCHOR payments will be staggered and issued on a rolling basis.”

There have been nearly 1.7 million applications overall, and more are expected, as the application deadline isn’t until Dec. 29.

Most can expect to receive their payment about 90 days after filing, but in some cases the Division of Taxation will need additional information.

For those waiting for payments, there is a “Check Benefit Status” tool on anchor.nj.gov where applicants can find out if their application is still processing or if their benefit has been issued.

The department estimated that more than 700,000 people would be included in the latest round of payments.

The payments, ranging from $450 for renters to $1,750 for some senior homeowners, correlate to tax year 2020.

Paper checks will be mailed starting this week, and all applicants should receive the payment by the end of the month.

The program was instituted last summer as part of the 2023 fiscal year budget, and the first round of payments went out in April.

For the fiscal year 2024 program, officials decided that the payment process should be moved to the fall, just weeks before voters head to the polls. In this case, all 120 seats in the Legislature are on the ballot next month.
