ELMWOOD PARK - CUSMANO, Carmela (nee Manicone), age 76, of Elmwood Park, died on January 1, 2024. Born in Passaic, Carmela lived in Garfield for 30 years before settling in Elmwood Park 46 years ago.

Carmela taught for 20 years at School #5 in Garfield, NJ, before retiring in 2014. Carmela earned her bachelors degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and her Masters degree from Marygrove College. She was also a member of the NJEA and AFT. She was known and loved for her generosity and dedication to her students and school community. Previously, she had been employed at the Garfield Trust Company for nearly 20 years in the mortgage department.

Carmela loved being involved with her Elmwood Park community. She volunteere­d on both the 75th and the Centennial Celebratio­n Committees; she was a member of the Library Board, a faithful parishione­r of St. Leo’s RC Church, and served as a Republican County Committee Chairperso­n for four years. She was a Dolphins, die-hard Yankees fan, and Aaron Judge supporter.

She is predecease­d by her beloved husband of 31 years, Stefano, a son Thomas, her parents Thomas and Sadie Manicone, her brother, Anthony Manicone, sister-in-law, Maria Manicone and brotherin-law, Paul Militello. Carmela is survived by her loving and devoted son, Stephen Cusmano, two dear brothers, Michael Manicone and Frank Manicone and wife Nancy; her sisters-in-law, Betty Manicone, Marie Militello, Rosalia and husband Luigi Attardo, along with many caring nieces and nephews. Carmela’s love and generosity to her family and friends was unmatched; she was adored by all, and she left a lasting impression on all those she met. Her fun-loving personalit­y, debating skills, Harvey Wallbanger Cake, and walnut tassies will be missed dearly. She was everyone’s favorite aunt, mother, teacher, and friend. Carmela had a heart of gold.

Visiting Friday 4 to 8 pm. Everyone will meet at the church for a 10 am Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at St. Leo’s RC Church, Elmwood Park. Entombment St. Nicholas Cemetery, Lodi.
