ORADELL - FLORENCE HORGAN SKEVIN, 93, of Oradell, NJ, died Feb. 26, 2024. She is survived by her children, John “Jack” Skevin of Passaic, Eileen (Cono) Fusco of Naples, FL, and New York, Thomas Skevin of Andover Twp., and James Skevin of Elmwood Park; granddaugh­ter, Michelle Skevin of Newton; beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends from throughout life. She was predecease­d by her son, Robert Skevin; parents, Richard and Florence (McDonald) Horgan; brothers Richard Horgan and the Rev. Edward Horgan, S.J.; and sister, Joan Weiler.

An Oradell resident for 66 years, Florence was born at home in West New York. She was a graduate of the Academy of Holy Angels and the College of New Rochelle, and earned her master’s degree at 61 from LIU. Prior to raising her children, she worked at MetLife. She returned to work as a library aide at Bergen CC, Paramus; and worked as a librarian for the Fairview school district. She also taught for the Bergen County Special Services school district and at St. Cecelia’s, Lyndhurst and Clifton high schools. She volunteere­d and served as an officer for decades for many Catholic organizati­ons, on the local (St. Joseph, Oradell), diocesan (Newark) and national (NCCW) levels. Florence was the first female altar server at St. Joseph, where she also served as a liturgy reader. She also volunteere­d for Starfish of Oradell/River Edge and numerous other charitable and civic organizati­ons.

The family will greet friends from 4-8 pm Friday, March 1, at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkama­rck Rd., Oradell. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Oradell. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
