TENAFLY - Joan H. Horowitz, Brilliant Writer, Editor, Beloved Wife and Mother.

Joan Klein, nee Horowitz, born in Brooklyn nearly 89 years ago to Ethel Horowitz nee Frankel and Sol Horowitz left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. Educated at Brooklyn College, Joan’s passion for the written word was evident from an early age. She honed her craft, becoming a gifted writer and an even better editor.

In a love story spanning over 63 years, Joan was married to her beloved husband, Richard Klein. They were fixed up by mutual friends and engaged after only six months. Together, they raised three loving children, Jonathan, David, and Liza in a home in Tenafly, New Jersey. She was especially proud that she passed on to her children her independent attitude, always advocating for them to do the right thing and not just what was popular.

Joan was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a pillar of her community. As a founder of Tenafly Women for Peace, she tirelessly advocated for causes close to her heart, embodying the spirit of compassion and activism. She was passionate about many causes including gun safety, access to abortion, equal rights, and the democratic principles upon which this country was founded.

After raising her children, Joan went back into journalism and began a new career as a writer and editor at the North Jersey Suburbanite. She dove into the issues of local politics with drive and energy. She later became a writer and editor at Oncology Times, where she was adept at turning medical issues into human interest stories. It’s no surprise that all her children would go to Joan for writing and editing input.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and passions, Joan was known for her timeless sense of style, and her varied interests. She loved to talk about politics, but also baseball, ballet and her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers.

Blessed with almost movie star looks, Joan’s inner beauty shone even brighter, touching the lives of everyone she met with her loving spirit. Though she may have left this world, Joan Klein’s legacy of love, kindness, and joy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. In addition to Dr. Klein, Mrs. Klein is survived by her three children; a brother, Michael Horowitz; and three grandchildren
