Ramapo qualifies for a shot at a three-peat state crown

- Greg Mattura

WAYNE — Ramapo is driving to a third consecutive NJSIAA Boys Golf Championship with a chance to repeat as Group 3 titlist.

The Green Raiders won the North 1 sectional title and were overall runnersup to Millburn at Tuesday’s North 1 and 2, Group 3 sectional tournament at Preakness Valley Golf Course.

“I told the guys from last year, ‘We have a target on our back,’ ” Ramapo coach Brian Gogerty said, adding, “So we weren’t going to sneak up on anybody, and we had to go out there and compete day in and day out.”

Ramapo is the only team from golfrich Bergen County to qualify for the State Championship on Monday at Raritan Valley CC in Bridgewater. Morris County enjoyed the advantage this season.

Junior Harry Cohen shot 2-underpar 68 on the West Course to lead Ramapo to a shoot-five, count-four score of 299. Cohen was supported by junior Peter Keith’ s 76, freshman Jackson Chud no ff’ s 77 and junior Jordan Weiss ’78.

“Our ultimate goal is to win it all. We want to be the best team in the [Tournament of Champions],” said Cohen, who was North 1 runner-up to Roxbury senior Jake Morgan, who shot 65. “And you have to get through this to get there, so it’s really nice to get through. And the team played great, and I’m excited to see what we can do in states.”

Millburn, a disappointing third last year, won North 2 and the overall title with a 294, and sophomore Tong Si was North 2 individual titlist with 67. Si was supported by senior Nate Beck’s 70, junior Gavin Quartin’s 76, and an 81 each by junior Jake Greenseid and senior Gavin Boyarsky.

“[Last year] was a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth, so it was nice to come back this year,” Millburn coach Garret Marron. “We didn’t lose a starter, so we had a good feeling we could go lower this year, so this was kind of bestcase scenario.”

Note: Under a new rule, the “Sectional individual champion will advance to the TOC,” according to the NJSIAA, and no longer the low five and ties.

Morristown won Tuesday’s North 1 and 2, Group 4 overall title and the North 1 sectional crown with 297 at High Bridge Hills GC in High Bridge.

Morristown teammates Liam Pasternak, a junior, and senior Cormac Meldrum each shot 1-under-par 69, with Pasternak winning the North 1 individual crown via match of cards. Senior Danny Lynch added 79 and senior David Vigilante 80.

Ridge shot 299 and earned the North 2 title and second qualifying spot to the

State Championship. Sophomore Enzo Allain carded 67 to win the North 2 individual crown, and he was supported by sophomore Ethan Gallagher’s 75, junior Sujay Sethi’s 78 and sophomore Kevin Zugale’s 79.

JEFFERSON — Madison qualified for next week’s State Boys Golf Championship by the slimmest of margins.

Madison won a three-way match of cards with Montville and Bernards because the fifth player, whose score rarely counts in New Jersey golf, counted as the tiebreaker at Monday’s North 1 and 2, Group 2 sectional tournament. The Dodgers had the best fifth scorer at Berkshire Valley Golf Course.

“We’ve had a lot of depth all year,” said Madison coach Matt Millichap, whose team advances to Monday’s NJSIAA Championship. “Even our sixth player was right there with the fifth player, and a lot of balance there.”

While Mendham won the overall title with a shoot-five, count-four of 312, Madison, Montville and Bernards tied for second at 317. The Dodgers’ fifth player carded 87 and that was one shot better than Montville and 12 better than Bernards.

Madison junior Alex Patel was North 1 medalist with 73. Senior teammate Nathan Tallinder shot 78, sophomore Blake Steele 81, senior Quinn Reagan 85, and the tiebreaker was won with sophomore Teo Bengsten’s 87.

Mendham won the overall title, as well as North 2, with four juniors carding 82 or better. Liam Brandt shot 75, Seth Harris 77, Anders Farley 78 and Ian Aitkenhead 82.

“It’s been a goal of the team to go to the TOC as a team for the past two years, so they’ve been working hard to meet that goal,” Minutemen coach Shira Brown said. “So it’s rewarding to see that hard work pay off today.” North 1 and Group 2, Group 2 At Berkshire Valley GC, Jefferson Par: 71
