John Edward McCarthy

-

- Dr. John Edward McCarthy, born to Edward and Catherine McCarthy on October 10, 1952 in New York City died suddenly in Burlington, MA on May 14, 2024. He is survived by his wife Laura; children Sean (Lauren) McCarthy, Sarah (Todd) Pauling, Daniel (Kelly Ann) McCarthy, Justin (Jenna) McCarthy, Brendan (Emilie) Emerson and Aislyn (Chris) Emerson; and grandchildren Isla, Dexter, Zoe, Marielle, Brooke, Eric, Poppy, Thomas, Grant, and Wyatt; and his brothers, Edward, James, Thomas, Timothy and Joseph.

Raised in River Edge, NJ John excelled as a scholar and high hurdler at Bergen Catholic high school holding individual and relay records. Dr. McCarthy graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School under a US Public Health scholarship. He completed his internship and residency at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and served as a physician at the North End Medical Clinic in Boston. John later joined The Lahey Clinic as a primary care and emergency room physician where he worked for almost 40 years until his death.

As his family and co-workers will attest, John was full of life and non-stop energy. When not working across the various departments at Lahey Clinic, you would find him engrossed in gardening, meeting up with his grandchildren, playing with his dogs, or immersed in a good book with a glass of wine by his side. John’s second home in Orleans, MA was his place of respite. On his rare weekends off, John and his wife Laura often walked their dogs around Rock Harbor at low tide to enjoy the sunset. He was totally devoted to his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and patients. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society for CLL research. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
