Yankees rookie Volpe slams A’s

-

Rookie Anthony Volpe hit his first career grand slam to cap a seven-run fifth inning and the Yankees pulled away for an 11-3 rout of the Athletics on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium to complete their first series sweep this season.

Heading into a four-game series against the MLB-best Rays, the Yankees have won three straight for the first time this season.

Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer in the first inning that was upheld after a review and DJ LeMahieu added a two-run shot in the fifth. The Yankees hit nine homers in the series.

Volpe, who ended a 0-for-17 skid Tuesday, lost potential hits on sliding catches in his first two at-bats. The shortstop gave the Yankees an 11-2 lead by driving a first-pitch fastball off Rico Garcia 419 feet.

With the Yankees leading, 1-0, on Gleyber Torres’s sacrifice fly, Bader hit a drive off Oakland lefthander Kyle Muller (1-3) that just cleared the right-field video board.

Oakland right fielder JJ Bleday attempted to make a leaping catch. A fan sitting in the front row appeared to reach over and make the catch. Replays appeared to show the fan’s glove was over the padding of the fence and the homer stood after umpires initiated a review.

Anthony Rizzo started New York’s biggest inning this year with an RBI single after Aaron Judge opened with a double followed by LeMahieu’s and Volpe’s homers. Judge finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Rodriguez stellar for Tigers

Eduardo Rodriguez struck out eight over seven innings, Javier Báez had two hits and two runs and the Tigers cruised to a 5-0 win over the host Guardians to win the three-game series.

Rodriguez gave up four hits and two walks, allowing only two runners past first base in his sixth straight dominant performance. The lefthander is 4-0 with a 0.43 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 41„ innings since April 12.

“Whatever pitch is working, I keep using it — and I feel like all my pitches are working right now,” said Rodriguez, who used a fourseam fastball on 50 of his 99 pitches. “As long as I keep getting guys out, I’m going to keep using it.”

In two starts against the Guardians this year, Rodriguez has thrown 15 scoreless innings and earned two wins.

Orioles take series from Rays

Dean Kremer pitched six scoreless innings and the Orioles edged the Rays, 2-1, at Baltimore.

The Orioles took two of three in a series between the top two teams in the American League. They trail Tampa Bay by 4½ games in the AL East.

Kremer allowed four hits and the Orioles broke through for two runs in the sixth. Wander Franco’s RBI single in the eighth cut the lead in half before Yennier Cano pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

Before the game, the Rays signed lefthanded reliever Jake Diekman to a major league contract and designated righthander Chase Anderson for assignment.

Phillies rally in 10th vs. Jays

Edmundo Sosa scored on Bryce Harper’s hard-hit grounder in the 10th inning after Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette’s throwing error and the host Phillies came back to defeat the Blue Jays, 2-1.

Harper lined a bouncer toward the mound and Tim Mayza made a good play to snare it and fired to second base to set up an apparent double play.

But Bichette’s throw went wide of first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Sosa just beat Guerrero’s throw home while sliding headfirst into the plate. Craig Kimbrel struck out two in a scoreless top of the 10th for the win

Astros overcome Ohtani HR

The Astros overcame Shohei Ohtani’s tworun homer in the ninth inning for a 5-4 victory over the host Angels.

Yordan Alvarez homered as the Astros took two of three at Angel Stadium with back-toback outstanding starts from Framber Valdez and Javier.

Hunter Renfroe hit his 10th homer for the Angels, who lost four of five to end a disappointing homestand against AL West rivals Texas and Houston.
