ABELSON, Susan J. (Cutler)

-

Age 72, of Mashpee, formerly of Salem and Swampscott, died on June 5, 2023, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. She is the beloved wife of Clifford “Kip” Abelson, with whom she shared 50 wonderful years of marriage.

Susan was born on June 29, 1950 to the late Sydney Cutler and Lorraine (Reiser) Cutler in Quincy, MA. She attended high school at Thayer Academy. Following graduation, she enrolled at Syracuse University, and later Boston University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. While attending BU, Susan met the love of her life, Kip, at services on Yom Kippur. Following her undergraduate pursuits, Susan went on to study at Northeastern University where she received her master’s degree. Susan then began what would be her lifetime career as a School Counselor, but more notably as a fierce advocate for her students. She worked in both the Salem and Swampscott elementary and middle school systems for many years, until her retirement just ten years ago.

Following retirement, Kip and

Susan moved down to their cape home full-time about 8 years ago. Susan was a congregant of Temple Sinai in Marblehead, MA for many years as well as the Falmouth Jewish Congregation here on the Cape. She and Kip loved to travel and have been to every continent apart from Antarctica, a trip they had been planning. Her favorite trip was the African safari in Tanzania. She was an active woman and enjoyed her daily walks even throughout her illness. Susan met many friends here on the Cape through her membership at Willowbend and enjoyed playing mahjong, canasta and of course golfing with her many friends. She was a meticulous homemaker both inside the house as well as out in her garden. She could be found tending to her garden several days a week and took great pride in her yard. More than anything, Susan is remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother, an adored grandmother, or “Bebe” as she was affectionately called and loyal friend. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Susan is survived by her beloved husband, Kip Abelson, of Mashpee; her daughters, Rachael Harris and her husband, Brian of Takoma Park, MD and Naomi O’Brien and her husband, TJ of Sudbury, MA; her brothers, Howard Cutler and his wife, Wendy of Canton, MA and Michael Cutler and his wife, Debbi of Newton, MA; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Ike Harris, Max Harris, Sydney O’Brien and Holden O’Brien.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at the Falmouth Jewish Congregation, 7 Hatchville Rd., in East Falmouth. A Graveside Service will immediately follow at the Falmouth Jewish Cemetery. The family invites all who wish to join them sitting shiva at their Mashpee home, on Thursday, June 8, 2023, following the services, as well as all day Friday, June 9, 2023.
