Sister Gertrude T. Mahoney, 93, went peacefully home to her good God on June 1, 2023, at St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center in Ipswich.

She was born in Somerville to Francis Mahoney and Eileen (O’Brien). Sr. Gertrude entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur on August 28, 1958, making her First Vows in 1961 and Perpetual Vows in 1966.

Sr. Gertrude graduated from Emmanuel College in 1952, with a degree in Business Administration and Biology, as well as taking postgraduate courses in Business Education at Boston University. She earned an

MBA from Boston College. During a sabbatical in 1985, she took courses in Scripture and Theology at Santa Clara University in California.

Sr. Gertrude used her knowledge of business and finances to serve as Treasurer at Emmanuel College, Boston, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Province and with the Oblates of the Virgin Mary as Management Consultant. As a result of her vision and business acumen, these ministries have enjoyed financial stability.

Gertrude was predeceased by her brother, Charles of Falmouth, MA.

She is survived by Charles’ children Katherine of Monclair, NJ, Elizabeth of Cumberland Foreside, ME, Joan Murcko of Arlington, MA, Charles of Needham, MA, and Richard of Denver, CO, and their spouses and children.

She will be greatly missed for her love for the Sisters of Notre Dame and her expressions of gratitude. And, as a true Bostonian, she was a big fan of the Red Sox.
