History: Smith makes men’s Mass. Am

Molly Smith of Westford shot a 1-over-par 73 to become the first known woman to qualify for the men’s Massachuse­tts Amateur Golf Championsh­ip in its 115 year history on Tuesday at Andover Country Club. But she failed to qualify for the US Women’s Open, tying for fifth at a local qualifier at Duxbury Yacht Club Wednesday. Smith finish the first round evenpar 72 and the second round 3 under for a 36hole total of 141. Only the top three finishers (plus two alternates) advance to the women’s open in July. Darquea of Ecuador was one shot back, 8 under through two rounds for a 136 total. The third qualifier is Canada’s Celeste Dao, 6 under through two rounds with a 138 total. The alternates are Spain’s Luna Sobron and Isi Gabsa of Germany.

Mayer hits first home run

Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer blasted his first Double A home run as the Portland Sea Dogs fell, 9-6, to the Akron RubberDuck­s. Despite the loss, Portland remains in first place in the Northeast Division. Mayer went 2 for 4, adding a single . . . Adam Duvall and Yu Chang appeared on rehab assignment­s for Worcester. Duvall went 1 for 4 with a walk and played all nine innings in center field, and Chang went 2 for 3 with an RBI and played five innings at shortstop.

Colts CB out of practice

Indianapol­is Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. was held out of practice, two days after team officials said they were aware of an NFL investigat­ion into gambling allegation­s about one of Indy’s players. Neither the Colts nor the league have publicly identified Rodgers as the target. But Rodgers issued a statement on Twitter acknowledg­ing he made an “error in judgment” just hours after media reports linked him to the investigat­ion . . . The Tennessee Titans will be the first NFL team to bring threetime All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in for a free agent visit.

More penalties issued

NASCAR issued another set of penalties for illegal modificati­ons to its second-year Next Gen car, this time against Legacy Motor Club and driver Eric Jones. NASCAR said the team modified the greenhouse on the No. 43 Chevrolet and fined crew chief Dave Elenz $75,000 and suspended him one race. WC payday for women

Every player at the Women’s World Cup will be paid at least $30,000 by FIFA, and the 23 players on the title-winning team will each get $270,000.
