CHRIS THILE AND THE

KNIGHTS The ever-restless Thile gets his orchestral jones on with this performance. Intended to be an exploration of American music, old and new, it will include Thile’s “Attention!” (which he labels “a narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra”), Curtis Stewart’s reimagination of Dvorak’s “American Quartet” as a folk-inspired jam session, and Colin Jacobsen’s Dvorak-bluegrass mashup, “Sheriff’s Freud.” Oct. 27, 8 p.m. $59-$89. Mechanics Hall, 321 Main St., Worcester. 508-7543231, www.musicworcester.org

THE PAPER KITES There’s an unusual story behind the Paper Kites’ new release, “At the Roadhouse.” After converting an old supply shop in the remote town of Campbell’s Creek in their native Australia into a music venue, the band held a residency there, workshopping new songs during the day, playing them for an audience at night, and recording them the next morning. Oct. 30, 8 p.m. $32, $37. The Wilbur,

ANNA TIVEL This Portland, Ore., singer-songwriter released her album “Outsiders” in 2022. Then she went back to the beginning and released another version of the album — ”Outsiders (Live in a Living Room)” — that featured her and accompanist Jon Neufeld on acoustic guitars, “wandering through the stories as they were first imagined,” as Tivel puts it. She performs this show solo.

Nov. 2, 8 p.m. $20. 2nd SHIFT Music Series, Charles River Museum, 154 Moody St., Waltham. www.charlesrivermuseum.org/ second-shift-music-series
