Gibbs, Lions trample Raiders

-

Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs ran for a season-high 152 yards and a touchdown, Jared Goff threw for 272 yards with a score, and the Lions beat the Raiders, 26-14, at Detroit Monday night.

The NFC North-leading Lions (6-2) stalled on three early drives, setting for field goals, before Goff threw an 18-yard strike to rookie Sam LaPorta to put them ahead, 16-7, late in the first half.

Goff threw an interception that Marcus Peters returned 75 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, allowing Las Vegas (3-5) to pull within 2 points. Detroit’s next drive ended when Craig Reynolds fumbled at the Raiders’ 3.

The Lions kept the ball and scored on their third drive of the second half, taking a two-score lead on Gibbs’s 27-yard touchdown run. Riley Patterson made a 52-yard field goal to give Detroit a 12-point lead.

Las Vegas welcomed the return of Jimmy Garoppolo, but lamented that he threw a league-leading ninth interception one play after the Raiders recovered a fumble in the first quarter. Garoppolo, who missed six quarters because of a back injury, was 10 of 21 for 126 yards.

Giants trade DE Williams

The struggling Giants traded defensive end Leonard Williams to the NFC West-leading Seahawks for a pair of draft picks.

The Giants (2-6) said they will receive a second-round draft choice in 2024 and a fifth-rounder in 2025 for Williams, who had a $32 million salary cap hit this season, the highest on the team.

Seattle (5-2) has two third-round picks next year, which will help soften the blow of giving up a secondrounder.

The deal came a day before the NFL trade deadline at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Adding Williams is the second move Seattle has made in the past week to add to its defensive line. The Seahawks reunited with veteran defensive end Frank Clark last week after Uchenna Nwosu was lost for the regular season with a pectoral injury in Week 7 against Arizona.

New York's record made it a seller at the deadline and Williams has been playing well lately, starting seven games. He blocked a field-goal attempt against Washington a week ago Sunday, had 21 tackles and had been steady against the run.

A nine-year veteran, Williams started 53 of 61 regular-season games and two playoff games with the Giants after being acquired from the Jets in October 2019. He was the No. 6 overall draft pick by the Jets in 2015 and played 71 games for them.

QB Jones cleared

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been cleared to return to the lineup after missing three games with a neck injury.

Coach Brian Daboll said Jones was seen by a spine surgeon Sunday before the game against the Jets and was cleared to have contact. The coach expects Jones to practice fully Wednesday.

Jones had been ruled out of the Jets game Friday so he was not eligible to play in the 13-10 overtime loss.

The Giants (2-6) could have used him since veteran backup Tyrod Taylor was forced to leave the game midway through the second quarter after hurting his ribs going to the turf in front of the Jets bench. Practice squad player Tommy DeVito finished up.

Taylor was held overnight in Hackensack (N.J.) Medical Center for observation. Daboll said Taylor was still sore and had not been released, noting the injury was considered serious.

Cousins injury confirmed

Kirk Cousins has a torn right Achilles’ tendon that will end his season, the Vikings announced after his first career injury put a somber tone on their three-game winning streak.

The Vikings announced that the MRI confirmed their initial fear of a tear after the 12th-year quarterback went down in pain in the fourth quarter at Green Bay Sunday after planting his foot in the grass to try to avoid a sack. He quickly limped off the field, unable to put weight on his right leg.

Rookie Jaren Hall took over from there, as the Vikings held on to beat the Packers, 24-10, and climb above the cut for the playoffs after an 0-3 start. Staying there will be far more challenging without Cousins, their ever-ready leader who’s suddenly and stunningly unavailable to play.

Cousins will have surgery on a tobe-determined date, the Vikings said. No recovery timetable was announced, but it’s typically at least a six-month process for returning to full strength.

Fields out third straight

Quarterback Justin Fields will miss his third consecutive game because of a dislocated right thumb, and rookie Tyson Bagent will continue to start in his place when the
