Feehan corners final

Arc from Eddy is difference in D1

- By Cam Kerry GLOBE CORRESPONDENT Matt Doherty reported from Manning Field in Lynn, Keith Pearson from Weymouth, and Ethan Winter from Leominster.

Maddie Eddy wound up on the bottom of a celebratory postgame pile with her Bishop Feehan soccer teammates, giggling.

Just 17 minutes prior, Eddy trotted to the right corner, found her target, and looked to the sky, reciting John 3:16.

“I said, ‘God, you got me,’ ” said Eddy, a senior from Seekonk committed to Merrimack College.

Eddy curled a corner kick just underneath the crossbar for an unassisted goal, which held up as the winner as second-seeded Bishop Feehan upended No. 3 Hopkinton, 1-0, in a Division 1 semifinal at BC High on Tuesday night.

The Shamrocks (20-0-1) face Natick in Saturday’s state final.

“Unexpected — I don’t think she’s done that this year,” Bishop Feehan coach Phil Silva said of Eddy’s boot, which pushed the Shamrocks into the state championship for the first time since 2019.

“This is everything for me,” said Eddy. “I couldn’t dream of this moment, honestly.”

Natick 5, Brookline 2 — The topseeded Redhawks (20-1-1) scored twice in the first seven minutes, the hot start providing the baseline for the semifinal victory over their Bay State Conference rival, the No. 5 Warriors at BC High.

Sophomore Abby McCauley slotted home a corner kick, unassisted, underneath the crossbar and junior Cassidy Moriarty powered through a shot from 25 yards out, depositing it inside the left post.

“If someone had said to me that this many goals were going to go in in this game, I’d have said that you’re crazy,” said Natick coach Dave Wainwright.

Seniors Amara Ukomadu and Emma Eisenhauer scored for the Warriors (16-4-2), who twice pulled within a goal, but never even.

Division 2 State

Notre Dame-Hingham 3, Masconomet 2 (SO) — NDA had its 2022 season end with a quarterfinal shootout defeat to Grafton. The past few weeks, the Cougars dedicated a portion of each practice to work on penalty kicks.

Tuesday, that practice and preparation paid off: Fourthseeded NDA (15-6-3) outlasted No. 1 Masco (18-1-2) on PKs, 4-2, in Lynn to advance to Saturday’s state final, the program’s first appearance since 2013. It will face the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between No. 6 Mansfield and No. 2 Nashoba Regional.

“It’s crazy how much time we’ve spent on penalty kicks” said senior Sydney Comeau, who scored both goals in regulation.

Fittingly, Comeau delivered the winning kick. She took a deep breath, stepped forward, and fired a left-footed strike to the bottom right corner.

Masco battled back in the second half thanks to goals by Lauren Boughner and Kayla Scannell.

Division 3 State

Norwell 2, Medfield 1 — Freshman Kelsey Tuttle had a pair of chances in the first half that she skied over the crossbar from close range.

A bit farther out proved more to her liking. Tuttle settled a pass from classmate Ally Kelley and fired a right-footed missile past the outstretched dive of Medfield keeper Fia Flamand in the 75th minute, lifting the fourthseeded Clippers (22-1-1) to a 2-1 win over the No. 1 Warriors at Weymouth High.

“I was really frustrated with myself because I know I could have capitalized on that,” Tuttle said of her early misses. “That goal felt so good.”

Norwell controlled the first half and was rewarded in the eighth minute as freshman Hannah Morse banged in a rebound of a Kelley shot.

Medfield freshman Sidney Heavey, the daughter of twotime Women’s World Cup champion Kristine Lilly, pulled the Warriors (19-2-1) level in the 46th minute off a corner kick.

In search of its third state title since 2018, Norwell will play either Hanover or Dover-Sherborn in Saturday’s final.

Division 4 State

South Hadley 4, Lynnfield 3 (SO) — In the 78th minute at Leominster’s Doyle Field, Lynnfield senior captain Ally Sykes converted a penalty kick after being tripped in the box, forcing overtime.

Twenty minutes later, with the game tied 3-all after two overtimes, it was South Hadley goalie Drew Ally who scored the decider in the shootout to send the top-seeded Tigers (19-1-2) to their first final since 2019.

“I was happy to finish [the win] for our team,” said Ally. “We’ve all worked hard for it.”

Lauren Marjanski, a College of Saint Rose-bound senior with 100-plus career goals, tallied three in regulation for Lynnfield (17-3-2).
