Man ordered held without bail in Wareham slaying, officials say

A man was charged with fatally shooting his father in Wareham on Monday and ordered held without bail, officials said.

Robert Gomes III, 26, of Wareham, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Wareham District Court to charges of murder, assault to murder a person over 60 years of age, and assault and battery with a firearm, said Beth Stone, a spokesperson for Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office.

Gomes pleaded not guilty. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Dec. 27.

On Monday around 3:35 p.m., police received a 911 call from Gomes, who said he had shot his father, Robert Gomes Jr., 61, in an apartment. When officers arrived at 1146 Main St., they found Gomes standing in the driveway with his hands in the air. When asked if he was armed, Gomes said he had a gun in his bag on the back deck. Officers placed Gomes in handcuffs and found his father on the back deck. He was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m., according to court records.

Gomes told police that he had spoken to his father in the kitchen just before the shooting and asked him to unlock the shed so he could take a photo of a power washer stored there. His father went out the back door toward the shed while clenching his teeth and fists, quickly turned around, and pointed his finger at him and said, “I’m going to kill you,” Gomes told police. Gomes then got his gun from his bag and shot his father, he told police.

Gomes said he bought the gun from a “website that he could not remember,” according to court records.

Police previously responded to the apartment on Dec. 30 when the father said his son had “come home drunk and was being belligerent ‘tearing up the house.’” By the time police arrived, Gomes had left and no further enforcement action was taken, according to court records.
