BC men fall to Wake Forest on late three

Hunter Sallis scored 21 points, Andrew Carr made a 3-pointer with 11.5 seconds left, and Wake Forest beat Boston College, 84-78, in men’s college basketball at Conte Forum Tuesday night. Wake Forest (10-3, 2-0 ACC) has won eight straight for the first time since winning 16 in a row in the 2008-09 season. Wake Forest led, 77-67, with 3:24 left. But Claudell Harris Jr. scored 10 of Boston College’s next 11 points, capped by a jumper from the free-throw line with 1:07 left to get the Eagles within 79-78. Kevin Miller dribbled down the clock and drew the attention of three defenders in the lane before passing it out to a wide-open Carr in the corner for a 3-pointer. Cameron Hildreth sealed it by stealing BC’s inbound pass and making a layup with 9.3 seconds left. BC (9-4, 0-2), which led, 40-36, at the break, had won its last 19 games when leading at halftime. The Eagles had also scored 80-plus points in four straight games.

Harvard men crash boards

Chisom Okpara scored 22 points and had four steals as the Harvard men held off Albany, 76-71 at Lavietes Pavilion. Harvard (9-4) was dreadful from the 3-point line, making 5 of 19 shots, and struggled from the free-throw line (17 of 28) but hauled in 13 offensive rebounds.

No. 4 UConn men in a rout

No. 4 UConn broke out of its conference doldrums with an 85-56 rout of DePaul at Storrs, Conn. Cam Spencer scored 20 points for the Huskies (12-2, 2-1 Big East). UConn shot 58.2 percent from the floor and made 12 of 26 shots from behind the arc (46.2 percent).

BASEBALL Yamamoto: Opt-out options

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will have two opportunit­ies to opt out of his record $325 million, 12year contract with the Dodgers, although the timing is tied to the health of his pitching elbow. If Yamamoto has Tommy John surgery or is on the injured list for a right elbow injury for 134 consecutiv­e service days from 2024-29, he would have the right to opt out after the 2031 and 2033 World Series, according to terms of the deal obtained by the Associated Press . . . Yuki Matsui can earn $33.6 million over five seasons with the Padres if the Japanese reliever becomes the team’s closer, and the pitcher could opt out of the deal after three years and $14.5 million if his pitching elbow remains healthy.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Georgia TE Bowers to draft

Junior tight end Brock Bowers, who led No. 6 Georgia in receiving despite missing four games, confirmed his plans to enter the NFL Draft. Bowers led Georgia with 56 catches for 714 yards and six touchdowns.

NBA Bulls’ LaVine back Friday?

Bulls guard Zach LaVine could return to the lineup as early as Friday’s game against Charlotte if there are no setbacks in his recovery from a sore right foot. LaVine has not played since Nov. 28 and is testing out his foot this week in a rehab stint with the G League’s Windy City Bulls.

SOCCER Birmingham fires Rooney

England great Wayne Rooney was fired as the manager of second-tier club Birmingham after 15 games. Rooney earned only two wins since his controvers­ial appointmen­t in October. Birmingham was sixth in the Championsh­ip when he started, and has fallen to 20th. NFL great Tom Brady became a minority owner of the club in August.

DARTS Littler, 16, in world final

Luke Littler reached the final of the world darts championsh­ip at the age of 16, extending one of the most unlikely stories in the history of the sport. Littler, an unseeded player from Runcorn in northwest England, beat 2018 champion Rob Cross, 6-2, to get into Wednesday’s title match against Luke Humphries. The winner of the final will earn $630,000 and Littler already has guaranteed himself $250,000.
